CHLI Congratulates and Celebrates its Newly Created Alumni Association
and Welcomes the Inaugural Alumni Association Board
March 6, 2017 - Washington, D.C – On Friday, December 9, 2016, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) held a reception in celebration of its newly formalized Alumni Association. Created by the alumni, for the alumni, the Association seeks to foster a culture of leadership, community, and continuing investment in advancing opportunities for Hispanic leaders, for CHLI program graduates.
With over 200 alumni from across the country, the Alumni Association strives to benefit its present and future members in the areas of alumni fellowship; facilitation of an interactive CHLI alumni community; promotion of professional development; pursuit of educational development and opportunities; and participant mentorship.
“It’s with great pride that we launch the official CHLI Alumni Association. Every decision we make, every vote the CHLI Board takes, is in the best interest of our students and interns. Now our alumni can continue to be an even more active part of the CHLI family through the newly chartered Alumni Association,” said CHLI Board Member and Alumni Association Founding Sponsor, Emilio X. Gonzalez, Executive Director of Strategic Alliances for Verizon Wireless.
The creation of the Alumni Association would not have been possible without the volunteer efforts of alumni, namely Brenda Villanueva, Geenae Rivera Soto, Angelica Perez, Irene Castro, Perla Salazar, Alexander Alba, Eliza Ramirez, Wendy Martinez, Guillermo Vallejo, Leo Velasquez, Eduardo Arabu, and Alex Correa. A very special thank you to Wendy Martinez, who served as the interim President, Eliza Ramirez, interim Vice-President and Eduardo Arabu, interim Secretary.
"We are thankful to the CHLI Board for its commitment to helping Hispanic young professionals advance in their careers as well as grow into leaders of the Latino community. Through the creation of the Alumni Association, CHLI graduates are now part of a network created to support and provide professional development and mentorship opportunities to its members, all the while positively impacting the Hispanic community in our nation’s capital and throughout the country," said Wendy Martinez, former Alumni Association interim President.
Following the formalization and celebration of the Alumni Association, and under the guidance of interim Board appointed Elections Monitor, Brenda Villanueva, the Alumni Association held its first election on February 21-22, 2017. Ms. Villanueva announced on February 23, 2017, that the following alumni were elected by their peers to serve on the Alumni Association Board for a one-year term:
“The newly formed CHLI Alumni Association is the embodiment of our mission; to celebrate the diversity of thought in the Hispanic community. With the inaugural elections of Eduardo and Eliza, the Alumni Association seems ideally poised to continue the legacy of CHLI for the next generation,” said CHLI's Programs Committee Chair, Patrice Webb, Sr. Director, Partnerships and Community Outreach at American Beverage Association.
CHLI will continue to celebrate its commitment to prepare, connect and honor leaders at the annual Alumni Association Luncheon, held prior to the CHLI Gala and Leadership Awards. The Luncheon brings together current interns and fellows, alumni and strategic partners to showcase the promise and success of our CHLI alumni.
Congratulations to the Alumni Association and the newly elected 2017-2018 Alumni Association Board!
