Spring to the Springs Family Fun Ride and Trail Celebration - March 1

We  had an exceptionally great turnout for the Spring to the Springs Family Fun Ride and Trail Celebration on the Loop in West Volusia with Finish Line BBQ and drawing at Blue Spring State Park. We more than doubled last year's attendance. Special thanks to Blue Spring State Park, Volusia County Parks, Recreation and Culture, REI Co-op Winter Park, Visit West Volusia, the City of DeBary, AdventHealth Fish Memorial, Visit West Volusia, Integra 289 Exchange Luxury trail-side apartments and all our partners, volunteers and prize donors for supporting our event.

It was a glorious day - cool in the early morning but soon becoming sunny and warm.  Riders of all ages and abilities got out on the Loop to celebrate. Many discovered unknown trials in West Volusia.  Here's a quote:

“I love our trails!  I’m an avid cyclist, averaging 150 miles per week, so I thought I knew our trails well, but boy was I wrong!  My wife and I recently rode the Spring to Springs Ride, and it introduced us to many more miles of great trails.  We all can be grateful to the St. Johns River2Sea Loop Alliance whose tireless efforts help inspire, maintain and promote a world class trail system in our area.”

 Ernest C. Audino
Brigadier General, U.S. Army (Ret)
District Director for Congressman Michael Waltz (FL6)

The prize drawing drew much attention and many happy winners.  Jack Knicely was MC with assistance from Dominic Capuano.  Special thanks to Ed Sullivan for provide the sound system so everyone could hear and join in the fun!

Charlotte was one happy camper and Mike was one happy rider after winning these great prizes donated by REI Co-op Winter Park and JCs Bikes and Boards at the Trail Celebration.

Special thanks to Brigitte Loper of REI Winter Park for sponsoring and setting up the kiosk with gear advice and great gifts for all.

Here are a few photos and you can view many more photographs here

At the Trail Celebration in Blue Spring State Park following the ride, we enjoyed great BBQ featuring smoked meats, hamburgers and hotdogs by Master Chef Ron Holloway, and vegetarian side dishes & deserts provided by Linda Knicely, Tracy Harrison and others. We had fabulous drawing prizes donated by our wonderful partners - JC's Bike Shop donated a beautiful new cruiser bike and a bunch of cycle gear,  REI Co-op Winter Park donated a Backpackers Bundle containing a tent, sleeping bag and air mattress, Ed Sherman donated 3 refurbed bikes, and many local restaurants and services provided gift certificates.  Lots of photos of excited prize winners!

It was a magnificent day for photographs - check out the bountiful collection. Thanks to a profusion of delightful subjects and photographers including Stephanie Liskey, Arnette Koshiol Sherman and as always Jim and Maggie Ardito.

Changes to other Events Due to COVID-19

What a difference 2 weeks makes! While we were fortunate to have a wonderful event on March 1, previously announced events have been seriously impacted by the COVID-19 Virus.

Here's the latest about the Trail Trifecta/ St Johns River to Sea Loop Summit scheduled for March 18 - 21 in Titusville:

As a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic, we have had to make changes to our original program, and this notice will outline our modified schedule as it currently exists.  Many of our partners in this initiative are already under travel restrictions and we expect more announcements in the near future.
The Bike Florida Cycling Tourism Conference has been POSTPONED with no alternate date currently scheduled.  As soon as we know more about the scope and duration of the operational and societal changes as a result of COVID-19 and can work with Bike Florida to reschedule their efforts, we will make sure you are notified.
The St. Johns River to Sea Loop Summit has been modified significantly.  Here are initial details:

  • On Thursday, March 19th we will continue to host Dan Burden from BlueZones for his keynote presentation at 1:00 PM, however the location will be moved to Council Chambers at the City of Titusville (555 S Washington Avenue, Titusville, FL 32796).  We are also working with the City of Titusville and the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization to live stream his keynote through various channels to make it available to anyone that cannot or will not be able to attend in person.
  • We are developing a plan for the rest of the workshops to be presented ONLINE through GoToMeeting.  Again, we will provide a schedule and details as soon as we have the chance to reformat and make sure all of the plans are in place.
  • The Half Day Strategic Action Planning Session with the Office of Greenways and Trail has been POSTPONED with no alternate date currently scheduled.  Our plan is to host that half day session as soon as possible, and again we will keep you updated on details.

We are GOING FORWARD with the Gear Up Ride It Down Community Trail Ride on Saturday, March 21st.  Please consider joining us and helping us spread the word that this event is still moving forward.  Please refer to for more information and a link to registration.  If you registered for the ride as part of your overall registration in the Trail Trifecta, that registration is still good and we look forward to seeing you on the 21st!

REFUNDS!  We will be issuing refunds to all attendees registered for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday activities.  If you are still able to join us for Dan Burden, you will still receive a refund and we welcome your attendance.
We’d like to thank everyone for their understanding.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know.  This is a very fluid situation and is going to require additional communications.  We know everyone is being inundated with communications on COVID-19, so we will do our best to keep our e-mails focused and concise.

East Coast Greenway Summit

In addition there are major changes to the East Coast Greenway Summit scheduled for April 1-4 in Jacksonville

COVID-19 Update

After careful evaluation of the evolving circumstances surrounding coronavirus COVID-19 and consultation with key event partners, the East Coast Greenway Alliance has made the decision to shift the 2020 Southeast Greenways & Trails Summit  from a four-day event in Jacksonville, Florida, April 1-4, to a virtual #GreenwaySummit during the same time period. Click here for more information.  With such a dynamic lineup of industry leaders set to speak in Jacksonville, we plan to create digital offerings of select presentations. We will update this website with information on how and when to access this content in the near future.

Volusia Parks Director Tim Baylie Named FBA's Trail Manager of the Year!

Volusia County Parks, Recreation and Culture Director Tim Baylie was recently named Florida's Trail Manager of the Year by Florida Bicycle Association.  The honor is well-deserved  - Tim has been a powerful force for trails and is one of the main reasons the St Johns River to Sea Loop was designated as a top-priority Florida SUN Trail.  He's dedicated to keeping Volusia County a great place to live and visit.

Trails and Parks Draw Visitors and Residents

There's a reason people want to live in Volusia County!  Seven years ago when we were searching for a retirement place we had these main criteria - great trails, great parks and a great town - a place where we could live mostly outdoors and mostly car-free.  After searching all around central Florida we chose DeLand. This week we met another person home-shopping by bicycle with the same criteria and he's reached the same conclusion we did.  We look forward to welcoming Michael Tyrrell to our cycling community!

Remember the Alliance is always looking for volunteers and board members.    Contact us for more information:

Show Congress Your Support

Investments in active transportation have the potential to deliver powerful economic, health and environmental benefits for every community. In fact, RTC’s most recent study shows that active transportation in America generates a return on investment of $34 billion annually, which could grow to $138.5 billion over time with passage of these bills.
The trail-funding package outlined above would provide critical support for the development of a modern-day active transportation system, while offering impactful strategies to achieve the ambitious goals laid out by Congressional leaders.
By adopting this visionary approach, our country could make leaps and bounds in transforming America with safe, connected trail and active transportation networks, RTC is urging everyone to communicate to Congress the importance of supporting the funding package.

The Alliance has recently been awarded the GuideStar Gold Seal of Transparency.  We earned a 2019 Gold Seal of Transparency by adding information about goals, strategies, capabilities, vision and finances.  The Alliance mission is to advance, advocate, support, promote and protect the St Johns River to Sea Loop, its corridor and connecting trails. This Gold Seal affirms the difference we are helping to make in our corner of the world by making it more bikable, walkable and livable.

We believe that supporting trails and bike-friendly infrastructure is the best way to support the environment, community/quality of life, economy, health and fitness, safety, low-impact tourism and equitable mobility.  People who are active outdoors are happier, healthier, and more self-reliant.  It’s more than infrastructure – it’s our way of life.

We need your help to continue our important work.  The River to Sea Loop Alliance is a non-profit 501(c)3 that relies on private donations to achieve our ambitious goals.  We are asking for your support.  There are several ways to donate:

  1. Use the “DONATE” on Facebook (this is actually the most cost-effective way to donate. Facebook does not charge a fee to certified nonprofits. However make sure we also get your email address by sending a message.)

  2. Use the "DONATE NOW" button on the River2SeaLoop.Org website, (this will send you to paypal - but you don't need a paypal account - just click on pay with credit card)

  3. Send a check to St Johns River to Sea Loop Alliance, 532 W Florence Ave, DeLand, FL 32720

  4. If you prefer to be invoiced, simply send us an email.

  5. If your organization wishes to sponsor the Alliance annually or for a particular event, contact us at Info@River2SeaLoop.Org or use forms on the website.
