Protecting Your Rights Under the Michigan Employment Security Act

If you’ve filed a claim for unemployment insurance benefits with the State of Michigan, it’s important to monitor any and all paperwork which you might receive. If the Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) issues a Determination or a Redetermination regarding your claim with which you disagree, you are only given 30 days in which to file a protest or an appeal. It’s imperative that you reply as soon as possible in order to preserve and protect your rights.
Though the unemployment insurance system is intended to be user-friendly, it can nonetheless remain a very daunting prospect to face the UIA. Keeping track of all of your paperwork, monitoring your deadlines, and complying with all UIA requests can go a long way towards protecting your unemployment insurance benefits. If you’re scheduled for a hearing, you need to prepare yourself to be questioned by an administrative judge or an attorney: keeping a file on everything that happened involving both your former job and your unemployment claim can really reduce your stress and make the process much more efficient.
If you’re worried about defending yourself against charges of fraud or other disqualifications, and would like the assistance of someone who understands the system and can help you manage the process, please contact us online or call our office today. Toll Free: 1 (855) TISH-LAW.
Nicholas J. Pietropaolo joined Tishkoff PLC as an associate attorney earlier this month.

What’s your background?
I received my undergraduate degree from Drew University in 2005, majoring in Philosophy and English. I received my Master’s Degree in English from SUNY Cortland in 2007. I earned my J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 2013, and passed the Bar in 2014; I’ve been practicing for almost three years now.

What’s your area of expertise?
I suppose you could say my area of expertise is unemployment law and collections, with some experience in general employment claims including wrongful termination and discrimination.
What have you learned in the industry over the years?
I’ve learned a lot about the importance of building relationships, both with clients and with other attorneys. It’s always good to know the people with whom you are working. Staying positive and pleasant goes a long way.

What’s a part of your job that you like/are good at?
I guess it’s clichéd perhaps, but the best part of being an attorney is being able to help people out of difficulties. There’s something very satisfying about knowing how to take what for someone else is an enormous burden and handle it with effectiveness. I like to think that I’m at my best when I’m able to use the accumulated knowledge and experience I’ve obtained to be able to tell someone “Don’t worry about that – we’ve got it covered.”

Anything to say about working here at Tishkoff PLC?
Everyone has been incredibly warm and welcoming, so I look forward to things to come!
