NITOC Invitations

Watch your email!  We will send invitations to NITOC by email in April and May. These invitations go to the email address you registered with in Speechranks. Please take time now to verify that your Speechranks email is up-to-date. If you do not receive an invitation and think you should - contact us! We can help!

Note these NITOC Moments!

If you are competing in Speech only, your competition begins on Tuesday. You may attend either the Sunday or the Tuesday ceremony and check-in. You do not have to attend both. Students competing in debate check-in on Sunday. Definitely plan to attend one of the Opening Ceremonies! This is a key moment for a celebratory week!

Union Camp for Younger Kids!

Are you bringing younger siblings to NITOC?  What will they do? Do they get a little antsy?  Do you wish there was a special event for the younger people?

Guess what?  There is!  Union is hosting a camp for ages 6-14 on-site during NITOC.  The camp is staffed from the Union staff and students and offers physical activities and arts-n-crafts.  You can register for morning or all day sessions.

Read more about it (and sign up) here.

The Volunteers

During the War of 1812, thousands of brave men from Tennessee answered the call for enlistment, earning for the state of Tennessee the nickname The Volunteer State, and the people of Tennessee the nickname The Volunteers. The volunteer soldiers played an important role in the war which inspired The Star Spangled Banner. In the spirit of our host state, please volunteer to serve at NITOC and be a Tennessee Volunteer. Here are some opportunities:

Help Desk Staff Needed
Are you a people-person with a cheery and helpful disposition? We are looking for individuals interested in serving with the Help Desk team.

First Aid Team
We are collecting a list of basic first aid responders to be on call during NITOC. Your role would be to respond to general minor injury or illness events, as a layperson, who happens to be the closest basic first aid responder in the area, who would be able to "do something". You would not be considered an official NITOC designated health care provider. The Help Desk keeps basic first aid supplies on hand for "self-care" treatment. We also keep information on hand for pharmacies, urgent care clinics, and hospitals nearby. For more information, please contact Leinani Mikol .
Do you have a nice camera and enjoy taking pictures? We are pulling together a team of amateur photographers who will capture NITOC on film. Requirements include a digital camera and a willingness to take the time to snap photos at various times throughout the tournament. Photography duties will not interfere with judging or other volunteer opportunities, as we try to distribute the time slots as best we can. Email Chris Jeub to express your interest.

Video Tech
Have a knack for recording videos?  Please contact Gary Cardinale to join the team.

Electronic Script Submission

You may be asking, why do we bother with script submissions?

  • To honor God
  • Protect and improve ourselves
  • Protect and honor authors’ intent
  • Integrity
  • Standardization so everything necessary for an evaluation is present if a question arises.

NITOC 2017 will require electronic submission.
Besides the above-listed reasons, electronic submission reduces the work load of tournament check-in and aids in a proper review of scripts.

Need help to scan and submit scripts? Check out these tips and a link to last year's video to walk you through the process.

Self-Timed Limited Prep Speech Events

Unique dilemmas call for creative solutions.  Our Limited Prep rounds call for a large number of timer people.   In each limited prep room, we will have a giant timepiece and a head judge to operate it. This includes Apologetics, Mars Hill Impromptu, and Extemporaneous Speaking. Competitors delivering the speech will be responsible for self-timing their speeches by watching the time during prep and presentation. (Thank you, debaters for showing us it can be done.)

Please review the NITOC timing protocol.

Debate Thoughts

Are you debating at NITOC?

Now is a great time to review the Team Policy, Lincoln Douglas, and Parliamentary debate event rules. You may be thinking “I have been debating all year. Of course I know the rules!” However, you may be surprised to find out that many of the concerns that arise at NITOC have to do with students simply not following the rules for their particular debate event. Don’t assume you know them. Take time now, before NITOC, to make sure you know them. Then follow them.

For easy access, here are the debate event rules.

TP and LD debaters, please review the Evidence Standard Document before your next tournament!
