I recently worked with General Finishes, which is based out of East Troy, WI to explore their water-based and oil-based wood finishes. We sampled seven different finishes on ash wood to see how the wood would take to the application. We saw that with the proper finishing you can achieve the wood look you want, regardless of species.
Working with sustainable-sourced materials can require backup plans and compromise since inventory depends largely on Mother Nature. You may be set on the idea that a certain wood species will achieve the color or grain you are looking for in a project, but then find that volume is limited. My test with General Finishes demonstrates the flexibility that finishing can provide. Mix and match - with the right stain, anything is possible.
