DeKalb and Fulton Counties…
Nighttime Lane Closures on SR 154/Memorial Dr this weekend for Resurfacing
Motorists should expect traffic delays!
ATLANTA— Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contractors will begin the final phase of the SR 154/Memorial Drive Improvements Project this weekend. The project is designed to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians along the corridor in DeKalb and Fulton counties, and replaced roadway’s reversible lanes with designated left turn lanes at key intersections and improved pedestrian crossings.
Weather permitting, starting tomorrow evening, work crews will begin milling, inlay and resurfacing activities on five miles of SR 154/Memorial Drive at Pearl Street in the City of Atlanta and move eastbound to SR 155/Candler Road SE in DeKalb County. The work will require lane closures to ensure safety for drivers and workers; heavy equipment will be used in the roadway. Please note because of heavy equipment residents will experience intermittent noise.
The project is scheduled for completion this June. When complete, the newly resurfaced road will include new, permanent striping and arrows for the reconfigured travel and turn lanes; enhanced traffic signals with efficient timing for morning and evening commute traffic flow; and improved pedestrian crosswalks and pedestrian-operated beacon signals.
The Memorial Drive corridor has long been a familiar alternate route for commuters traveling between downtown Atlanta and central DeKalb County. The reversible lane system was put in place to accommodate the growing commuting and commercial traffic on the corridor; however, over the years, increased traffic volumes and speeds resulted in increased incidents and growing safety concerns for drivers, bikers and pedestrians. GDOT, the City of Atlanta and other transportation partners have collaborated to plan and implement the new road configuration and improvements.
Variable message boards will be placed on both ends of the project and near key intersections within the project limits to inform drivers of upcoming lane closures. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling on SR 154/Memorial Dr. SE during the project work hours. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.
