Ten years ago Allan Akman came to Pyramid to explore the possibilities of screenprinting. The results are exhibited in this solo show of hand pulled screenprints. Akman's meticulous nature is evident in these rich and carefully layered works that represent a decade of art making. Learn More >

Exhibition: July 21–August 18, 2019

Three printmakers working in intaglio are are exhibited in this inky and entirely dark hued show. These well crafted works offer diverse imagery, ranging from the natural world to the digital age. Cohesively, the prints have a velvety and mysterious quality achieved through the techniques of etching, drypoint, and photogravure. Learn More >

Bookbinding I

This one-day workshop will introduce you to the basics of bookbinding to make your own notebooks, journals, or albums. You'll learn pamphlet, accordion, Japanese stab, and hard-covered binding, plus properties of adhesives and tools in a basic bookbinding tool kit. Learn More >

Screenprinting 101
July 7, 12–5pm | $130
Ever wanted to make your own posters? Screenprint is an artistic yet economical method for producing prints from digital or hand-drawn designs. This workshop will prepare you to work independently in the darkroom and studio. You will learn the basics of prepping images, exposing screens, and printing with inks. Learn More >

Inside the Blank Book
July 10, 6–8pm | $40
Explore the use of text and discover concrete writing techniques. We'll play with a number of writing tips and prompts and explore what Flannery O'Connor calls "the habit of finding meaning in things." By the end you'll have new tools to invigorate your own journal-keeping process. Learn More >
Summer Workshop:
Dyeing to Pigment
July 10, 6:30pm–9:30pm | $75
In this fast-paced workshop, you will learn how pigmenting and dyeing techniques differ, and make many paper samples of both. We'll start off working with natural dyes such as indigo, walnut, and cochineal dyes and then move on to experimenting with brightly colored fiber-reactive dyes on paper.

Experiments with Monotypes

Monotype printmaking is a painterly technique that offers the opportunity to create artwork that is layered and rich. We will create unique artwork with the help of plexiglass, ink, stencils, mark making tools and the press. Learn More >

Eco-Dyeing on Paper
July 13, 10am–4pm | $155
Learn how to dye paper with leaves and other assorted materials and make an accordion book to use as a substrate. During our break, we'll take a field trip around Pyramid to identify plants that can dye natural fibers. You'll also learn how to use rusty objects to make interesting designs. Learn More >

DIY Rollers with Ross
July 13 & 14, 10am–4pm | $310
In this two-day MAKE+TAKE, participants cast and assemble their own customized roller for professional quality applications. The instructor, Ross Mazzupappa, and his assistant, Christina Humble, have used these rollers for many printmaking processes including relief, lithography, monoprint, and intaglio viscosity. Intro to Printing Without a Press

Are you a lover of all things DIY, or just want to create at home? Come learn how to expand your toolkit and make prints with readily available items and techniques. In this 3-session workshop, you'll learn stamping, stenciling, and collagraph printing.

Paper Casting from Vegetables

This session, we will be casting thin sheets of wet paper onto dried plant matter. Once dried, they create hollow, lightweight forms with an abstract, ecological touch. Great for anyone interested in natural sculpture or expanding their view of papermaking.

Screenprinting with Rainbow Roll
July 18, 7–9pm | $40
We’ll have designs burned into screens, inks mixed, and paper ready. Just bring yourself! This session guides you through screenprinting with rainbow roll so you can print with multiple ink colors simultaneously. You'll create improvised, painterly mini prints using abstract shapes, gradations, textures, and transparent layers of color. Learn More >

Writing the Illustrated Book

To create a compelling work that connects with an audience, artists and authors need to understand narrative structure, even if a project is wordless. Develop your understanding of plot and learn to work with tension and catharsis in this writing workshop focusing on story. Learn More >

Photo Lithography

Explore lithography using photo-sensitive aluminum litho plates. Create hand-drawn and digitally-produced photo positives, and learn proper exposure, development, and printing of photo litho plates. Learn More >

Bookbinding II
July 21, 12–6pm | $155
Further your bookbinding skills with two more advanced sewing structures, including long-stitch and a hard cover binding with sewn-over tapes. These two structures will allow for the binding of thicker books, which will be ideal in the creation of journals or sketchbooks. Learn More >
Flower Folds on Mini Accordion Books
July 24, 7–9pm | $40
We’ll have bone folders handy, paper trimmed to size, and PVA a plenty. We’ll show you how to make mini accordion books that incorporate printed scraps neatly hidden into flower folds. Mixed Media Printmaking: Monotypes, Embroidery & Collage
