Dear Autism Society Members and Community,

Hope this newsletter finds you well.

We are settled into the virtual world now and have a month of fun activities planned including game nights, support groups and an interesting Ted talk watch party and conversation.

We are very excited to welcome 2 new board members, Rachel Tracosas and Linnea Bertram! They both have unique skills and experiences that will be a great asset to our organization we are thrilled to have them join our team.

We are always looking for new ideas for fun, interesting and educational programming and activities to offer our community. If you have any ideas we would love to hear from you. You can call, email or drop us a message on social media.

With all that is going on in the world right now I hope you are taking a little time to take care of yourselves and are finding some time to get outside to enjoy the beautiful weather!

Executive Director

Message from the Autism Society of South Central WI Board of Directors.

We would like to share that we are continuing to put our members’ health and well-being first and foremost as we choose to continue all our events and programming virtually until at least July 31. Given current data and best available science, we do not anticipate in-person events until then at the earliest. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we navigate this new territory.  We will reassess the situation and keep you informed of any changes. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. Please know that you are very important to us and we remain dedicated to supporting you in any way we can.

Congratulations to our
2020 Jacob Trotter Memorial Scholarship winner,
Jakob Williams!

Jake will be attending Ripon College in the fall and plans to become a physical education and health teacher. Read more about Jake and our yearly scholarship and  here.

For Teens and Adults on the Spectrum
Monday, June 8, 2020
Monday, June 22 2020
6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

via zoom
We are taking our Board game night online and invite autistic teens and adults to join us for some fun and games!
Join us June 8 for another really fun round of the “Price is Right” where we will be guessing prices of weird and funny items actually for sale on the internet.  If you are the one who comes closest to the actual price without going over, you will get a point.  The participant with the most points at the end of the night will be emailed an impressive printable winning certificate.    Thanks to Mara Ansfield for doing the research and capturing the pictures of these items for us.  Some of the things we will be “pricing” are so strange you would swear they couldn’t be real.
For the game night on June 22nd,  we will be playing a couple more rounds of word games like hangman (guessing the letters of a word until you figure out what the word is) and “Pictionary” (Guessing the name of what someone is trying to draw).  We’ve had lots of fun with these games in the previous month.   Winners in each game will be emailed an impressive printable winning certificate.

Compliance is not the Goal

Wednesday, June 24, 2020
7-8 pm

via zoom
Join us via Zoom at 7pm on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 to watch an informative and thought provoking TED talk by educator Amy Laurent, PhD, OTR/L .   This TED talk link was publicized in the Spring 2020 issue of the newsletter of the Autism National Committee.  The title of the TED talk is  “Compliance is Not the Goal: Letting Go of Control and Rethinking Support for Autistic Individuals”.  The talk lasts about 20 minutes and highlights the importance of supporting rather than trying to extinguish the “autistic behaviors” of those on the spectrum.  The presentation contains many words of wisdom from adults on the spectrum.   After we view the TED talk, Nancy Alar, President of the Autism Society of South Central Wisconsin and mother of a “gloriously autistic” 42 year old man, will lead a discussion of the issues raised by Amy Laurent in her TED talk.   We will be done by or before 8pm. Please RSVP by June 23rd. We will send you the zoom link on June 24th.

The Autism Society of South Central Wisconsin is a small, local nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of all who are impacted by autism by providing information, resources and support while raising awareness and acceptance in our community. Through donations and fundraising events we are able to offer most of our services free of charge to individuals and families affected by autism. Like all other nonprofits we have been hit hard by the current pandemic. We understand that not everyone is in a position to make a donation at this time but if you believe in our mission and are in a position to support us we would greatly appreciate it. Donations made during this time will enable us to continue providing support and programming during these uncertain times.
