On the Journey to Continuous Improvement

Happy New Year and welcome back! We celebrated the accomplishments of 2018 and look with anticipation to the exciting events ahead in 2019. The December Blue Ribbon Celebration was amazing, showcasing all of the reasons we were selected as a Blue Ribbon School and continue to be recognized as a School of Excellence by the state of Florida! We are only half way through the school year, and there is still so much more to come.

One of the first events of 2019 is the School Community Day, a day dedicated to beautifying our school. There are numerous projects on the list that require good old-fashioned hard work and elbow grease. The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th. If you are interested in helping or perhaps have a company with a particular skill/talent, please complete the Google Form if you are willing and able to join us.

The third quarter also brings a number of school events and the beginning of state required testing. This year, we will host the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test in 8th grade. Specific information about testing is included later in this issue. You can always stay up-to-date through the School’s Google Calendar. Next week, report cards go home, however, you can monitor your child’s progress, verify your contact information, and check attendance on FOCUS. Please, look for details in the coming weeks on re-enrollment forms and activity fees.
As many of you may know, Florida has been closely evaluating school safety and has implemented many new initiatives and requirements for schools stemming from last year’s tragedy. The A.D. Henderson & FAU High School Crisis Response Team has been assessing our school safety preparedness, emergency planning, and refining our processes. The primary goal is to keep students safe, so you may notice new procedures, drills, and requirements. An easy way for parents to support the implementation is to make sure emergency information on file with the school is correct, stay up-to-date with school information, have responsible conversations about safety with your children, and be involved with your school community. As additional initiatives are rolled out more specific information will be included in the weekly school alert.

Each year, the Florida Department of Education recognizes outstanding individuals working in school districts as selected by their peers. Please join me in congratulating our 2020 District Teacher of the Year – Jenny O’Sullivan, and our 2019 District School-Related Employee of the Year – Cesar Carnero! We are very proud to have Mrs. O’Sullivan and Mr. Cesar represent our school and district!

Just a reminder, you are invited to join me for my second Parent Coffee Chat on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, from 8:10 – 9:00 a.m. in the media center.  Our first chat was a great start, so please consider taking some time to attend and be part of our continuous improvement.

Finally, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kindness and generosity that you shared with me, the staff, and the faculty. The gifts, the food, and special treats are wonderful at the holidays, but I most appreciate the support and love you share each day. This school community is truly a family. Thank you, and I wish you the very best in 2019!

A.D. Henderson Elementary Highlight

A Celebration of Reading
In celebration of all the hard work our kindergarten students have done with their reading, the 8th grade students were invited to buddy up for some read alouds.  Being part of the Henderson K-8 family allows our students the unique and special opportunity of working with different grade levels. The kindergarten students were able to pair up with an 8th grader and "show off" all their “reading super powers” before we left for winter break. The event was a wonderful way to celebrate reading!

A.D. Henderson Middle School Highlight

Kennedy Space Center
After spending second quarter studying space in Ms. Milu’s science class and reading The Martian by Andy Weir with accompanying research texts in Ms. Anderson’s English class, the 8th grade took a culminating trip to Kennedy Space Center. They explored the main center, had lunch with former astronaut Norm Thagard, and took a bus tour of the grounds to see the launch pads. It was a trip they will never forget!

Chorus, Theater, Dance, and Cheer Winter Showcase
Ms. Francani, Ms. Gass and their students outdid themselves again this year with a fantastic showcase that highlighted more than half of our talented middle school students. They sang, danced, acted, and cheered for a full house at FAU’s Arts and Letters Auditorium.

Happy New Year!
This is a great time to discuss second-semester goals with your children. Did they earn the grades they hoped for in 2nd quarter? Were they active in clubs and sports? Was their behavior and attitude what we expect of an A.D. Henderson student and what you expect at home? With the new year comes a time to reflect and make a plan for growth. The entire middle school team is here to help make this new year the best, so be sure to encourage your children to reach out to their teachers, Ms. Hoff, Mrs. Hallstrom, and Mrs. Nayman to have a positive impact on their goals. Together we will have an awesome 2019!
*Please remind your children that participation in end-of-year field trips and activities is dependent on good behavior and grades during the 2nd Semester. Any student with challenging behavior that requires administrative involvement, or failing grades, may be removed from field trips and activities.

FAU High School Highlight

Upcoming School Reminders

Spelling Bee Is Around the Corner

The annual School Spelling Bee is around the corner and scheduled for January 25th. Teachers will be hosting their spelling bees sometime over the next two weeks. Winners of the Classroom Bees will compete in the School Bee on the morning of the 25th. Parents of winning students will be invited to attend the school-wide Bee. The First through Third Grade Bee will tentatively begin at 8:25 am in the cafeteria and the Fourth through Eighth Grade Bee will begin at approximately 9:30 am in the Media Center. Teachers are welcome to come with their classes to support the School Bee participants. Times will be finalized as the date approaches. Only one winner from each class will compete in the School Bee. The top two winners of the School Wide Grades 4-8 Bee will represent ADHUS at the Regional Scripps Bee in Palm Beach.

Please direct any questions to Mrs. Sands.

Upcoming State Required Tests

We are a Florida public school district and, as such, are required to participate in all state tests. As you plan your second semester, please keep testing dates in mind. Students in grades 3-12 will take a variety of state standardized tests based on student grade and scheduled courses. Students in grades 3-6 will be paper-based testing, and students in grades 7-12 are computer-based testing. A sample population of 8th-grade students has also been selected to participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress on January 31, notices have gone home and the letter is included here, as well. Official testing letters for all students will be sent home at the beginning of February with specific days and subjects for grade level testing. The overview only indicates which days and grades your students will be testing and is subject to changing as needs change. If you have any specific test-related questions, please direct them to Gina Sands at
