Intensifying our European engagement

UCL's collaborations have continued apace both in Europe and further afield in the run up to Article 50 being triggered:
Funding European collaborations
As UCL's Global Engagement Funds open again for 2017/18, discover how UCL is continuing to foster innovative research and collaboration with partners in Europe through its grassroots funding streams.
UCL for Refugee Education
UCL collaborations in Europe were among those showcased at the fun and insightful UCL for Refugee Education week, during which UCL launched its new undergraduate Access Opportunity Scholarship.
Student launches language learning platform
Entrepreneurial UCL student Agnieszka Nowicka (Cognitive and Decision Sciences MSc) has launched Langu – a live online language platform to make learning a language accessible for as many people as possible.
RUE 2017: Attracting global students
UCL's Pro-Vice-Provost International Dr Karen Edge gave a keynote speech at top French higher education conference RUE 2017 in Paris, on how UCL continues to attract and offer opportunities for global students.

The DART-Europe research portal, led by UCL Library Services, has grown to showcase more than 700,000 Open Access research theses from 606 universities in 28 European countries - Croatia is the newest member.

Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice-Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, recently awarded scholarships to three UCL Qatar students in acknowledgement of their academic achievements to date.

It's been a busy time for Oliver Patel and the UCL European Institute. Here he shares more about his work as Research Coordinator.

Q: Can you tell us more about the UCL European Institute and your role there?

A: The European Institute is UCL's hub for research, collaboration and information on Europe and the European Union. We facilitate and promote academic work on Europe by connecting researchers across UCL and by commissioning reports, articles and podcasts. We also organise events and roundtables, for both public and policy audiences.

Update on EU recruitment
Despite the EU referendum and the recent triggering of Article 50, recruitment data indicates the picture is more positive than might have been anticipated back in June 2016. Against sector trends, UCL’s applications from EU students have actually risen this year.

UCL’s recruitment activity in Greece spans over 25 years, making the country one of UCL’s longest active international markets. UCL is now the leading recruiter of Greek students in the UK, and Greece is in fact UCL’s largest single EU market for graduate students.

Funding opportunities

Please note that some funding calls are subject to an institutional cap and, if so, applications for these calls must be referred to the relevant Research Facilitation / Coordination office for your School, who lead UCL’s internal selection processes. You should also seek approval from your department and Research Services in line with the usual approval process.
PKU Strategic Partner Funds
PKU Strategic Partner Funds
As part of UCL's deep strategic partnership with Peking University (PKU), UCL academics from all faculties can apply for up to £10,000 funding to support their collaborative activities with PKU colleagues.
Apply by midnight on 1 May 2017.
PKU Strategic Partner Funds
UCL Global Engagement Funds
Now open for 2017/18, this seed funding facilitates UCL collaborations with colleagues based in other countries. Academics from all faculties can apply by 22 May 2017 for up to £2,000 (£4,000 if the lead faculty is Social & Historical Sciences or Arts & Humanities).
UCL / French Embassy Funding
UCL / French Embassy funding
Up to £2,500 is available for each collaborative workshop between UCL and academics based in France, specifically focusing on research in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Apply by midnight on 26 April 2017.
Grand Challenges Small Grants 2017-18
Grand Challenges Small Grants
UCL Grand Challenges Small Grants provide support for UCL researchers seeking to address a Priority Theme relating to one of the six UCL Grand Challenges. Up to £4,000 is available per grant, plus one award of £6,000 for work with an urban mobility focus. 
Apply by 22 May 2017.

Access Opportunity Scholarship
UCL has established a new scholarship intended to support those who, because of their immigration status, are not able to secure student loans for their higher education. Prospective students can apply until 28 July 2017.
