Was it only last year that they arrived at the orphanage from the middle of nowhere ? Looking so timid and scared...! And Look at them now ! They brought a bright smile
to the faces of our guests when they started their colourful dances at High Tea on october 20, 2016.
The Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia Peter MacArthur and the Canadian Ambassador to Myanmar Karen MacArthur visited the Orphanage of Pa van der Steur on September 28th, 2016. Our guests were given a very warm welcome when the children spontaneously sang their national anthem, O Canada.
"Sir, I have no father" said one of our children to our Canadian guests. "My mother lives below the poverty line. She brought me to this orphanage with the hope that I could go to school. I am at Secondary high school now. My dream is to give my mother a good life. Now I've heard that Canada is a country of immigration. Would it be possible for an orphan to be accepted into Canada ? How much money do you have to invest to be admitted as a businessman? "
The advise that the children got from our kind guests :"
"No matter what happens, no matter how far you seem to be away from where you want to be, work very hard ! Never stop believing that you will somehow make it. Have an unrelenting belief that things will work out, that the long road has a purpose, that the things that you desire may not happen today, but they will happen. Persist and persevere, your desired path remains possible"
Thank you...... Your Excellency Ricardo Luis Bocalandro of Argentina for your kind offer to do a bbq for the orphans of Pa van der Steur. The children will give you a very warm welcome !
"Today is my first day at the orphanage.I got so many new things : dresses, a teddy bear and sandals. The sandals are not my size but everybody said that soon it will fit as I will grow very fast as there is enough food here and I could eat three meals a day. I also got milk today. But most of all they promised me that I will go to school tomorrow. Later....if I am a big girl, I will earn money for my mum so that she also can have three meals a day. I miss her so much but a big sister hugged me every time I cried for my mum".
For the first time we experienced "banjir" (flood) on the terrace of our orphanage in Pondok Gede : Electricity that exploded; Computers in the computer lab that were burned; no light no water........
And yet....after all the children have worked very hard to clean up
we could go back to our motto : "Smiling on a daily basis, let's us get through a rough day !"
