MARCH 2017

NEWSFLASH

We take everything for granted until something happens that awakens you.
This happened to us last week when suddenly there was no water.
In an ordinary household there would be chaos if this happened, but in an orphanage with so many of us, it is a complete catastrophe.
Luckily we got help from a good friend and within no time two new water drums were placed to replace the ancient drums.
I can tell you...it feels like heaven to be able to just take a shower.
It was a big surprise for the two volunteers to see that learning how to play chess brought so much pleasure to the kids.
"If you continue to have passion and concentration to learn how to play chess, it would not surprise me if one day you will end up being THE Champions of Jakarta" said Matthew Taruno of the International School.

On the day of the Press, the Orphanage of Pa van der Steur invited 50 other children from various orphanages.
The children got a chance to talk openly in front of a camera about a certain happening in Indonesia.
The purpose of this day was to give the children self confidence and train them to feel comfortable with public speaking.

The kids pray a lot; They pray to get good marks; to get nice friends; to be happy......One day I told them to work harder instead of praying only ! It was that evening during dinner that I realised what impact my words had when I heard this little boy praying loudly :" Dear God, please forgive tante Nel. She doesn't know what she is saying"

THANK YOU to the spouses of all Ambassadors (SHOM) for your kindness at the 5th Food Festival at the prestigious Kempinski of Hotel Indonesia  ! You gave me the opportunity to introduce the Orphanage of Pa van der Steur to so many people. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The Four stages at the Orphanage :

The first days in the orphanage are overwhelming for each child. They are sad; they miss their family and the new surrounding frightens them.
Fortunately the sadness always - but slowly - fades away.
When the new children realise they are all in the same boat and have to share their joys and sorrows together, it creates a sense of family and togetherness between them.
After an adjustment period which differs for each child, the children mostly seem very happy
The last stage is Hope. Most of these children are very much aware they are orphans or are very poor. We teach the children that education is the most valuable thing we can give them. We tell them they really have a chance in Indonesian society if they keep learning. We teach them to dream and to work hard for whatever they're dreaming about. Most of them are very determined to become more than "just an orphan" and that eventually they will be able to give their own kids a better future.

We are in good hands but

we definitely could use your helping hands
