Diverse Learning Environments Survey

Beginning today, April 3, Olympic College is participating in the Diverse Learning Environments Survey (DLE) conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA. The DLE survey give our our students a chance to provide input on their perceptions of the campus climate, interactions with faculty and peers, college policies and procedures, goals and priorities, and learning outcomes.

Grounded in research on diverse student bodies, the DLE is responsive to the Diversity Advisory Committee’s (DAC’s) longstanding goal of assessing the campus climate for diversity. It will be used in conjunction with other campus data as a tool for strategic planning and benchmarking to enhance learning, retention, and completion.

The survey is available until April 28 and students who complete it will be entered into a drawing for a one-quarter tuition waiver. Other prizes include four OC Bookstore gift cards valued at $50 each provided by the OC Foundation.

Students, check your inbox for the link to complete the survey. More...

Equity & Excellence Lecture Series

In January, we launched our Presidential Equity & Excellence Lecture Series. The inaugural lecture was an overwhelming success with more than 800 students, faculty, staff and community members in attendance to hear acclaimed activist, author and scholar Dr. Angela Davis’ talk on Building Community: The Case for Educational Equity.

We held our second lecture in January, featuring Dr. Barbara Ransby (pictured right), a noted historian, university professor and writer. Dr. Ransby is Distinguished Professor of African American Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, and History at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where she directs the campus-wide Social Justice Initiative. Her lecture, Democratizing Knowledge: Teaching and Learning for Critical Citizenship, was a great success as well.

We thank everyone who joined us for these incredible lectures. For those who were not able to attend, the lectures are available online, via the Bremerton Kitsap Access Television Vimeo Channel, here: here:

Elephant in our living rooms.

Pop-Up Marketing

We began the academic year by installing a 20-foot tall inflatable elephant in front of the Bremer Student Center. It was an opportunity to confront the “elephants in our collective living rooms.” More importantly, it was a chance to begin to discuss the unpleasant truths that are too obvious to miss, yet still go ignored. The installation generated numerous discussions with students, faculty, staff and community members who stopped by to see what we were up to.

Keep your eyes peeled for our next surprise pop-up marketing effort. You can be sure that the next one will be unexpected and interactive. #Equity4Excellence

Update Posting Policy

At Olympic College we pride ourselves in creating environments that are safe and welcoming to all we serve, without regard to race or ethnicity, creed, color, sex, pregnancy or family status, national origin, age and other protected classes.

With that in mind, the college was recently informed of flyers that were posted around the Bremerton Campus that could be perceived as hurtful and discriminatory to members of our community. The flyers were removed in accordance with College policies. The College is working now to update this policy to ensure we have a comprehensive framework in place that is consistent with our Mission, Vision and Values so that our community is able to exercise their rights while respecting the voice of all that we serve. More to come on this. If you have any questions about OC posting policy, contact the Department of Communications & Web Services at:
