Hope Center Grand Opening

Having a Hope Center of our very own has been a dream in the making for some time, and now it's officially coming true.  The Hope center has begun and finished Phase 1 construction, which had been anticipated since we first bought the land for it years ago.  With walls, a ceiling, and now inside finishes, we are thrilled to report that the Hope Center is officially open!
The opening ceremony included time for prayer, song, a ribbon cutting, a speech from the mayor, honoring top students from 3 schools and awarding them with backpacks full of supplies.
This was an incredible event that was full of energy and tons of excitement.  165 people packed the inside to participate in the Grand Opening, with more people overflowing outside.
Beautiful cakes were provided by Elmase of Celestial Cakes.  Elmase is the wife of Dimitry, who is a huge part of Believe in Haiti's mission.  We are grateful to them both for their role in this Grand Opening.

Trees Galore and More!

We recently got to work planting a variety of trees on the land.  Soon St. Rock will be enjoying plantains, coconuts, papaya, and more with the huge addition.  Haiti has just gone through its rainy season and it continues to rain, meaning the impluvium is full and ready to provide water when it dries up.
In addition to all the trees, herbs, and other crops being grown, Believe in Haiti also received a donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of $1,500 worth of food, including fish, beans, rice, oats and more.  This has been a great way to vary the diet and add nutrients and a little more bulk.  As a bonus, all these factors combined also help with taste and enjoyment of each meal.
With the guidance of our main agriculture specialist, Flero, the parents of the children benefiting from schooling from the Believe in Haiti sponsorship program are out working hard on the land to help it grow.  Cultivating the land brings benefits to everyone and is a great way to earn/work for the sponsorship.  Plus, the residents of St. Rock have shown great excitement in watching the land grow and produce.

A Glimpse Inside

The Hope Center is through Phase one, meaning it has ceilings, walls, lights and electricity.  It is a functioning building, already home to English classes and sewing classes planned to begin next month.
Volunteers and residents of St. Rock have worked endlessly to build furniture and shelving, making this a great, functioning space.  We've got a large table in the kitchen, an office area, storage area, and tables and chairs for classes.  It's truly amazing.
We've got more to go, though.  The floor needs to be tiled, the cabinets assembled and installed, the rest of the kitchen installed, concrete work to be done, and it's necessary to build a security wall around the building to protect it.

Happy Father's Day!

Haiti celebrated Father's day on June 27th.  We are grateful to all the hardworking men that care for their families and help with Believe in Haiti's work.  We are especially excited for Sobner, a new father who wears many hats at Believe in Haiti, and just welcomed a son!
Meet Daphne
Daphne is a resident of St. Rock, though with the support of Believe in Haiti, she attends college in Port au Prince.  Not only is attending college a huge accomplishment, but Daphne has chosen to study nursing.  Daphne is the 2nd of four children.  Her dad passed away when she was young, so her and her siblings live with her mother, who works as a saleswoman to provide for her family.
