Pilot session ends
English classes came to an end a few months ago, and now the sewing program has finished up its first session. The last 6 months were used to pilot these new programs. A few goals we had were to see what the interest level was, see how organized and reliable each program would be, and see what effect the programs would have on the community.
Our first inquiry was answered very early on. There were SO many people interested in both the English and sewing programs. For 6 months, each class was at its capacity with students eager to learn a new skill. Next: reliability and organization. This is a tough aspect when working on things in Haiti sometimes. The culture is very different and sometimes it's hard to know how smoothly something will go. We are happy to report that this was not an issue with these programs. We hired two well-organized and very reliable teachers who each had a curriculum set and ready to go. Both teachers were experienced and happy to take the job of teaching in St. Rock. We could not have been happier!
Lastly, seeing the effect each program has on the community. The immediate effects we've seen have been positive. Some of the English students have already helped on our vision trips with translating. They will be continuing on to the next level of English class soon. Our sewing students have now finished the first course and have sewn incredible shirts, skirts, and now uniforms for school. We will continue to watch the students from each program for the long-term effects the classes have on the community!

At the moment, Haiti is making world news due to political unrest. The people of Haiti, a good portion in Port Au Prince and the surrounding cities, have been in the streets protesting and calling for the resignation of their current president. While Haiti has had many protests over the years, it currently is an escalated situation. The crowds and commotion have closed down banks and businesses as well as blocked gas stations from being re-supplied.
Believe in Haiti has many close connections in Haiti and many people we keep in touch with to hear about and assess the situation. We have found that often what is reported on the news is much worse than reality. We are saddened that this time the riots are truly severe. Haiti is filled with a people who, hundreds of years ago, fought their way out of slavery and into independence. To this day, they are still fighting for equality, freedom, and decency of life in their everyday lives.
We would like to share our heart-felt sorrow and condolences for Haiti right now. Haiti is so strongly kept in our hearts. We are happy that the people of St. Rock, the community we specifically serve, have been kept separate and mostly unaffected from the commotion of Port Au Prince. We continually watch the situation and hope that Haiti will be able to find the peace and better future that it deserves.

Our English teacher, Jeff, was accepted to a university in America! After securing his visa and gathering a few items, he arrived in Idaho a few weeks ago and is on his way to a college education. While we are sad to lose him as our English instructor, we are so proud of him, and so happy for him!

Haiti Spotlight
Menio
Menio is completing his first year of dental school and has received outstanding marks in his classes. His desire to excel in the classroom and his thirst for knowledge are unsurpassed, which are remarkable considering he lost his parents at a young age. Menio was cared for by an aunt after his parents passed away. While he was provided most of the basic necessities of life by his aunt, his hope for an education and successful occupation quickly faded away. This was just about the time Believe in Haiti stepped into Menio’s life.
Menio has been a student in the Believe in Haiti sponsorship program since 2013, where his final years of primary school and entire secondary school education were sponsored by Believe in Haiti. In demonstrating the scholastic aptitude to pass the national exam and graduate from secondary school, Menio earned a university scholarship from Believe in Haiti and serves as an example to the other schoolchildren enrolled in the school sponsorship program. Menio’s dreams are becoming a reality.
