Annual Executive Board Election

It is time to elect the vice-president, the recording secretary, two members-at-large, and an auditor to the Colorado Language Arts Society's executive board. Please read the candidate statements and cast your vote by 11:55 PM on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

Upcoming Business

The Spring 2020 issue of Statement, on the theme of Teaching for Social Justice, is in production. A separate e-mail will be sent when it is published.

Do you know a CLAS member who is doing outstanding work as a high school English educator? Nominations for the Colorado High School Teacher of Excellence will be open soon. State recipients are recognized at the National Council of Teachers of English convention.

Are you planning to attend NCTE in Denver this November? NCTE has special rates for hotel rooms during the 2020 NCTE Annual Convention. Conference registration is also open, so tell your colleagues!

Colorado Teen Literature Conference

The 32nd annual Colorado Teen Literature Conference is scheduled for April 18, 2020 with keynote speakers Alan Gratz and Varian Johnson. Registration is open now! 

This popular event is generously sponsored by Metropolitan State University of Denver, the University of Colorado - Denver, the Colorado Language Arts Society, Pikes Peak Library District, Colorado Young Adult Advocates in Libraries, and REFORMA Colorado.

New & Noteworthy

NCTE Student Writing Awards deadline extended

The February deadline for two of the NCTE Student Writing Awards has been extended to Friday, February 28:

  • The Achievement Awards in Writing program is open to high school juniors. The 2020 theme is “Why Do I Write?" (#WhyDoIWrite).
  • The Promising Young Writers program is open to eighth graders. The 2020 theme is “My Nature.”

Teaching and Learning Conditions in Colorado Survey open through March 2

All Colorado educators are asked to take the Teaching and Learning Conditions Colorado Survey (TLCC) by Monday, March 2nd. TLCC is a statewide, confidential survey intended to support school, district, and state improvement planning, as well as research and policy. Schools and districts need more than 50% participation and at least five responses to access their data.

Colorado Writing Project Summer Workshops

Dates for three locations of the summer two-week workshops offered by Colorado Writing Project have been released: 

  • Jefferson County: June 1-12
  • Boulder: June 15-26
  • Adams 12: July 13-24

More locations and dates for two-week workshops and two-day seminars will be announced.

Denver Writing Project Events

Entries are being accepted for the Colorado Young Writers Contest through March 20 for writers ages 13-15 and 16-18 in the categories of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. The showcase and award ceremony will take place on April 18 from 5:30 - 8 pm in the Lawrence Street Center at CU Denver.

Block out a few hours for writing at the BookBar Writing 5k, a writing mini-marathon, on Saturday, February 29th from 10 am to noon. Free registration is open through midnight on February 28th.

Applications are open for the Denver Writing Project Summer Institute, June ​8 to 26 on Auraria Campus in Denver. Attendees can earn up to six University of Colorado graduate credits that can be applied toward a master's degree in English or Education with an advisor's approval.

Poetry Out Loud

A program of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. The Colorado Poetry Out Loud finals will take place on Tuesday, March 3rd at the Lakewood Cultural Center at 470 S. Allison Pkwy in Lakewood. The first round of competition will start at 3:00 PM, and the second and final round should start around 5:30 PM. The event is free and open to the public.
