Dear Friend of the American Club,

Over the past decades, research in Antibiotics has plummeted since large pharmaceutical companies cannot make enough money, compared to other drugs. Parallel to this, Antibiotics are widely abused and eaten like candy by some, and especially by the agricultural industry where they are often given to animals as a precaution rather than a treatment. This has led to many pathogens of common infections to become resistant against many known antibiotics. It is increasingly common to read about “hospital super-bugs” for instance that have no cure, or almost none.

Gerry Quinn of Ulster University in Northern Ireland is a scientist looking for a solution, inspired by ancient tales and nature. This has led him to research the soil from graveyards in Northern Ireland, which has been known to have holy healing powers for generations.

Spoiler alert: The soil is not holy, but has healing power — it contains Streptomyces, a strain of bacteria that is also a powerful antibiotic.

You can find more about this amazing story here: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/astonishing-medical-potential-soil-northern-ireland-graveyard-180973741/

Gerry will join us for a Zoom session on January 27 at 7:30pm and tell us about this amazing story of “healing soil” from a graveyard in N. Ireland, in addition to other clues in history and nature that may help fight super bugs in the future. And, also about what it means to have the protection of powerful antibiotics to fight infection.

You can register for the session  by clicking the link below. You will then receive the Zoom link for the event. Please be a few minutes early so we can grant you access to the session.

About Dr. Gerry Quinn

Gerry A Quinn graduated from Ulster University in 2004.

He has previously held research positions in Florida studying pathogenic bacteria, in Ireland studying new treatments for bacterial biofilms, in Wales, studying amyloid proteins in soil and Streptomyces and Croatia studying phospho-signals which promote antibiotic production from Streptomyces in collaboration with Tubingen University.

In 2018 his diverse interests in botany, caves and folk traditions led to the isolation of a group of antimicrobial Streptomyces which could combat 4 of the 6 priority pathogens on the WHO hit list from an ancient Irish folk cure based on limestone soil.

He is currently based in the North of Ireland where he is interested in the identification of new antibiotics/medicines from traditional spiritual areas/medicines.

We look forward to seeing many of you for this first event in 2021! You may also share this event with your friends and family.

Kind regards
