Fondation Enfant Jesus - Newsletter - Summer 2016

Happy Back-to-School!

The School bell has rung....
A new school year at FEJ's School in Haiti has begun.

First, we want to thank the many summer volunteers who donated their time and expertise to enhance the programs highlighted in this update.

In July, the board of directors conducted their annual meeting in Haiti. The agenda included assessing strategies that will ensure the continued success of our programs.

Among the key takeaways was increasing and improving the awareness footprint of FEJ's work. As a result, our leadership needs your help. Please consider collaborating with us and learning about how to be a 'Brand Ambassador' helping to drive the organization toward growing our supporter base, a vital component that enables the staff to provide a range of quality programs through FEJ. If you want to jump start the process please reach out to Brian at and share with us why you are committed to the work of FEJ. Testimonials add credibility and passion to our vision and we would love to hear from you.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Marsha McVicker

Health clinic - New Maternity and Vaccination Programs

The FEJ Community Health Center continues to expand the programs it offers to the benefit of the community.
Maternity Program
Clinic staff are busy preparing for the upcoming opening of the new maternity service at the clinic that will allow complete care of pregnant women - from prenatal care through childbirth and postnatal care. The clinic will be equipped with an ambulance to transfer patients in case of complications. To date, more than 300 pregnant women have received prenatal care at the FEJ clinic and many are eagerly awaiting to give birth soon a the the clinic rather than making the long trip to a city hospital.

Vaccination Program Update
The FEJ clinic, in partnership with the Haitian Ministry of Public Health, began an immunization program this spring. Since it's launch, the clinic has provided vaccines to 151 children and 52 pregnant women to help protect them from deadly illnesses.

New School Playground thanks to Fondation Emmanuel Lesly Brezault!

From all the kids at the FEJ school, we send a big Thank You to "Fondation Emmanuel Lesly Brezault" for their support and donation of a new playground. When the kids return to school this fall they will greatly enjoy this new addition to the school grounds. This is the beginning of our collaboration that will benefit our children, and a part of our "Operation Smile" program with which we hope to "Change a child's life one smile at a time".

Family Reunification - an important part of FEJ's programs

The goal of FEJ's Child Protection Service Program is to strive to provide a family environment for each child. For many children in their care, this means adoption into a new family in another country. But another important aspect of FEJ's work is to encourage family reunification whenever possible.

Last December, a family (pictured below) found themselves in a desperate economic situation. They could not provides for their two children so they turned to FEJ for help. FEJ agreed to care for the two children while the parents got back on their feet. Happily, the parents were able to improve their situation and upon their request, they were reunited with their children in August! This outcome was done in the best interest of the children. While FEJ provides outstanding care at their creche, they also recognize that to thrive, it is ideal for children to live in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding.

So far in 2016, FEJ has united 7 children with their family of origin.

Volunteer Work Trips: A range of Activites

We were fortunate to benefit from several volunteer groups this summer! Early summer saw a group led by Stephanie Demers. This group provided language education training to the teachers as well as specialized training to the Clinic staff.  They were followed by agricultural and soil scientists from Oklahoma State University. Tyson Ochsner and Shane Robinson conducted training for prospective agricultural technician students  who plan to attend FEJ's vocation training program. Shannon Westveer's 'All About Dance' team provided a summer camp dance experience for dozens of kids from FEJ's school. Another program was led by "Mission of Tears" volunteers who brought a soccer camp to the FEJ students.  FEJ Staff also benefited from professional development training conducted by Lillian Duke's team. Her team also provided construction and maintenance work for the FEJ compound. Many thanks to these volunteers for contribution their time and talents to the benefit of the Lamardelle community!
If you are interested in becoming a volunteering yourself please contact us today!  Some of our current greatest needs are dental professionals and eye doctors.
