Dear Friends, Alumni, and Family of Cornell Fencing,
As I write this, I cannot believe another academic year has come to an end. On June 15th, we honored the graduating class of 2021 by holding an outdoor team banquet and senior celebration. In keeping with tradition, each of our seniors stood to give a speech. We heard words like “team”, “family”, “best friends” and “my support system.” As I listened to the seniors speak, I was once again struck by the long-lasting impact a good team has on our student athletes, not just while at Cornell, but for life. Senior Kalyn McGuire '21, while protesting that engineers cannot write, gave a speech that moved all of us; there was not a dry eye in the house!! I am sharing it here so you can all read it.

The Polar Plunge!!!! Thanks to your support, we were able to raise a last-minute $5,000, which allowed us to meet our Cornell-mandated annual fundraising goal. As a bonus, this final annual fundraising push successfully motivated Coach Susan to take a plunge into Cayuga Lake. It was a balmy 48 degrees, and a few of our student athletes braved the experience, as well. Here is a video of the plunge for your enjoyment.

I would like to send a special thank you to the Cornell Fencing Association board, especially board president Jake Ross Silverman '17, for all of their efforts this season. We could not have achieved all we did without all of the help setting up virtual reunions - which were so successful that we plan on doing more! - sending newsletters, posting on social media and providing me with much-needed comic relief at our meetings. As Jake leaves his post as president, Elise Pasoreck '07 will move into the role, so please give her a huge welcome.

Finally, I would like to make sure we maintain our momentum over the summer, so I will be hosting two Coaches’ Roundtables on Zoom. These office-hours-style meetings will be a chance to ask me questions, meet team members and catch up with other Cornell Fencing alumni. The first roundtable will take place on Wednesday, July 18th at 8 PM Eastern. The second will be on Sunday, August 22nd at 8 PM Eastern. Zoom links will be sent out shortly, and they will be posted to social media, as well.

All the best,

Ariana
