Significant Roofing Project at Upper Hutt School (please take time to read)
25th March, 2021
Kia ora Upper Hutt School whānau,
The junior school roof needs to be replaced due to significant leaking issues
This will mean the junior block will close and children in that block will move to different learning spaces for six months
The building project will start on theFriday 19th April (first day of the school holidays)
The move of children, teachers and spaces will be on Friday 9th April
In 2015 the school was identified as having weathertight issues. Since then the Board of Trustees has been working with the Ministry of Education to get these issues resolved. In 2017 the Senior Block was completely refurbished and the leaking issues fixed. We have finally been given the go ahead to start work addressing the Junior block issues. This re-roofing project will start on Monday 19th April (first day of the school holidays). It is expected the project will take approximately six months to complete.
The whole of the junior block will be closed while this work happens.
This is going to mean a move for the children and teachers in Rūma Tahi, Rua, Toru, Whā and Rima.
Rūma Tahi will move to the hall
Rūma Rua will move to Te Wāhi Whakamana
Rūma Toru will move to the brand new learning space at the back of the hall
Rūma Whā will move to the RTLB space (classroom closest to the corner of Benzie/ Brown Street)
Rūma Rima will move to Ruma Mohoki (our pre school space)
Our next New Entrant classroom will also be in the hall (we will create two classrooms in this space).
In the last two months there has been significant work done in the hall to ensure it is a good learning space for our tamariki (we learnt a lot from the last time we had classes in the hall in 2017). We have:
Created the new learning space at the back of the hall
Purchased large carpet rugs for the hall to help with comfort and noise
We have new glass doors on their way for all the entrances
We have new heat pumps being installed
A new sound system
We have a detailed plan for this move. The planned move date is Friday 9th April. This is one week before the school holiday starts. We want to move a week before, to allow time to set up new spaces and solve any issues. This will also give the teachers, children and parents a week to get used to their new spaces before we start the holidays. We felt this would be more settling for the children, rather than waiting till after the school holidays.
To help the children prepare for this move, a social story will be made available to all families for them to read with their children. The teachers will start to talk to the children about this move over the next few weeks. We will be talking with the children about our big adventure moving to new learning spaces!
Children will pick up how you are feeling about the move and so the more positive and calm you are - the more resilient and adaptable the children will be. I have been very impressed with the teachers who are moving. They have been talking about how this move provides new opportunities for how they teach and experiences they can provide for the children.
I thank you in advance for your patience, support, resilience and adaptability with this move. Families in Rūma Rima and the Library will know the significant leaking issues we have in the junior building and how essential this urgent repair work is. The end result - a dry, refurbished learning space for our junior children.
I will provide updates for you about this work over the coming weeks and months. If you would like to discuss this building project and move further, please contact your class teacher, or Claire Martin (DP) or myself.
