Pastor Diane

As I listened to Pastor Craig’s sermon on Sunday, I was struck by something I never thought about before. Sunday’s scripture passage was from the Gospel of Luke as Mary is told she will be with child even as a virgin. As you can imagine, no one believed Mary’s story as to why she is pregnant…not her family, friends, her whole community. I am sure she was the target of much gossip and distain. The only one who believed her was her fiancé, Joseph, because of a visit from an angel.

But God does something to encourage Mary. God causes an 80-year-old woman to become pregnant, Elizabeth, a relative of Mary. Another miracle. Two women who shouldn’t be pregnant. At the same time. Encouraging each other. Another person believing Mary’s story. What a joy for Mary.

How has God encouraged you when God has asked you to do something hard?

So as I think about this baby growing inside Mary, I am in awe of deity and humanity inseparably joined together. As one prayer says, “Thank you for the way Christmas reminds me that faith is both material and mystical. No confusion, but lots of wonder” (from Seeking God’s Face).

May God encourage you this Christmas season and fill you with lots of wonder.
