GREETING                                                           Pastor Craig

PRELUDE  Medley: O God Our Help in Ages Past,
                                        Our Help in Years to Come
CALL TO WORSHIP                                       Pastor Diane

Eternal Spirit, inspire us this day as though the sun of a new spiritual springtime had risen upon us! Carry us out of inner darkness and gloom into light, out of the deadness of isolation into life, out of drought into the fruitfulness and promise of a good harvest. We know Thee in our troubles, for they are many. We are burdened with the tragic sorrows of the world, with the needs and griefs of those we love, with inner perplexities and problems that destroy our peace. We must choose between faith and fear, courage and cynicism, strength of character and collapse of life…And we choose the better way!
                 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

Holy, holy, holy!
Lord, God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons blessed Trinity.
Holy, holy, holy!
all saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.
Holy, holy, holy!
though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord, God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Almighty God does not call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Draw us away from the easy road that leads to destruction, and guide us into paths that lead to life abundant, that in seeking your truth, obeying your will, we may know they joy of being disciples of Jesus Christ our Savior.

O LORD, deepen our appreciation of the opportunities that face us in this troubled time. Forgive us, that so often we ask for comfort and ease. Teach us the meaning of adversity and hardship. Beget in us the spirit of our pilgrim sires, who dared the wintry ocean and were unafraid. Make us worthy of the mothers and fathers who were before us, sending us out into an unfinished time, that we might bear a hand in becoming co-creators in its completion. O God, who can make a good world out of evil men and women, cleanse our hearts, forgive our sins, and amend our ways. Grant us that in this place, where we have come to worship Thee, your grace may change our lives. Turn us from the grudges we have borne, the lack of civility we have felt, the hates we have cherished, the selfishness we have clung to. May we go forth from this spiritual communion a more fit body to work for righteousness, we pray in the spirit of Jesus Christ. Amen
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
God of the unchangeable, when you fashioned the world the morning stars sang together and the host of heaven sang for joy. Open our eyes to the wonders of creation, teaching us to use all things for good, honoring your glorious name. Friends, in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

GLORIA PATRI                                                       Greatorex
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

ANTHEM     In the Presence of Jehovah     Geron Davis
                    Bruce & Carmen Nylund - soloists

In and out of situations that “tug of war” at me.
All day long I struggle for answers that I need.
Then I come into His presence and all my questions become clear. And for a sacred moment, no doubt can interfere.
In the presence of Jehovah, God Almighty, Prince of Peace,
Troubles vanish, hearts are mended, In the presence of the King.
Through His love the Lord provided a place for us to rest;
A place to find the answer in hours of distress.
There is never any reason to give up in despair;
Just look away and breathe His name,
He will come and meet you there!
SCRIPTURE READING                          Matthew 22:1-14

Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. “Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless. 13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”

SERMON      Are We Prepared to Attend?        Pastor Craig

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH           Apostles’ Creed    p. 35

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
     Why Stand So Far Away, My God   v. 1, 4, 5                 786

Why stand so far away, my God? Why hide in times of need? The proud, unbridled, chase the poor, and curse you in their greed.

In ages past you heard the voice of those the proud oppress. Remember those who suffer now, who cry in deep distress.

Arise, O God, and lift your hand; bring justice to the poor. Come, help us stop the flow of blood! Let terror reign no more.

DOXOLOGY                                                                          606
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

HYMN                  There Is a Balm in Gilead                   792

There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain,
but then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.

Don’t ever feel discourages, for Jesus is your friend, and if you lack the knowledge, he’ll not refuse to lend.

If you cannot preach like Peter, if you cannot pray like Paul,
you can tell the love of Jesus and say, “He died for all.”

               Let There Be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.
With God our Creator, children all are we.
Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now.
With ev'ry breath I take, let this be my solemn vow,
To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
