A Word from Pastor Diane

An Off-Road God

This Sunday, we will talk about exile. These past 7 months, you all have been exiled from our sanctuary. Back in the Old Testament days, the Israelites faced exile a number of times. And when they did, their question was: “Can we still be a people of God without a temple?” We asked this same question when our church sanctuary was closed.

Along comes God and the prophet Ezekiel with a crazy image of God (Ezekiel 1): a divine chair coming out of fire and cloud that has the heads of a lion, eagle, ox, and human with the best wheels ever. The wheels are wheels within a wheel with eyeballs and really amazing rims. These wheels can move in any direction and go anywhere.

One pastor called this image “an off-road God.” This is an image of an unchained, unwavering God who will lead the Israelites back to their temple after an exile. They will be a new people.

Will this off-road God lead us into new territory as we slowly make our way back? We will talk about this on Sunday as we contemplate what kind of a community we will be after an exile of 7 months. Will we go back to the same ole, same ole, or will we follow an off-road God with amazing rims into new directions?

We love you,
Pastor Diane

OPENING HYMN          To God Be the Glory         634

To God be the glory; great things he has done!
So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Refrain:

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord;
let the earth hear his voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord;
let the people rejoice! O come to the Father
through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory:
great things He has done!

Great things he has taught us; great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder,
our transport, when Jesus we see.

Refrain

CALL TO PRAYER

PRAYER OF LAMENT
Almighty God, You are our Rock, our Refuge, our hiding place. Hear our cry, Almighty God. Listen to our prayer. How long will we have to hide in our homes from this invisible enemy, this virus? Where will it strike next? And whom? And what if…? Our souls are weary from the strain of the life-altering unknowns. Heavenly Father, from the depths of our pain and confusion, we cry out to You. From fear-filled hearts and anxious minds, we plead with You. Rescue us, Father of compassion and grace. We lift up our eyes to You, Lord God, the One who sits enthroned in heaven. You are our Light as we walk in this darkness. Amen.

RESPONSE OF THANKSGIVING

                                    Give Thanks
      647

Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son
And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich
Because of what the Lord has done for us"
Give Thanks.

PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE/THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

CHILDREN’S TIME

SCRIPTURE READING

                                        Psalm 137:1-4
By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. There on the poplars we hung our harps, for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?

                                           Psalm 126
A song of ascents.
When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.

SERMON           Returning From Exile           Pastor Diane

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

                                     Apostles’ Creed                               p. 35

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen

HYMN  When God Restored Our Common Life                74

When God restored our common life, our hope, our liberty, at first it seemed a passing dream, a waking fantasy;
a shock of joy swept over us, for we had wept so long;
the seeds we watered once with tears sprang up into a song.

We went forth weeping, sowing seeds in hard, unyielding soil; with laughing hearts we carry home the fruit of all our toil. We praise the One who gave the growth, with voices full and strong. The seeds we watered once with tears sprang up into a song.

Great liberating God, we pray for all who are oppressed. May those who long for what is right with justice now be blest. We pray for those who mourn this day, and all who suffer wrong; many seeds they water now with tears spring up into a song.
