A Word from Pastor Diane

Email blast on “as we forgive those….”

This week in the Pray Like Jesus class, we are on a difficult section of the Lord’s Prayer: “as we forgive those who sin against us.” Many of us have favorite parts of the Lord’s Prayer, but this part is not the choice of many. It is too hard. We like to hang on to the wrongs people have done to us.

Note the “as” in this phrase. It goes with the phrase right before it: “forgive us our sins AS we forgive....” Forgiving the sins of others goes right along with receiving God’s forgiveness of us. How can we fully receive the grace of God if we cannot extend that grace to others?

The author of Pray Like Jesus practices a spiritual exercise that I invite you to try. Envision a large table. Jesus is at the table sharing a meal. The table is populated with your friends and loved ones. Visualize each face; focus on their needs and pray for them.

Now as you look around the table, you see the face of someone you have not invited to your table. Who is it? Is it someone not welcome?  Is it a person who has hurt you in the past?

Suddenly you see the face of Jesus at the table, and Jesus says, “Whose table is it? Is it mine, or yours? You decide.”

As we forgive those who sin against us.”

I must admit I have not tried this spiritual exercise yet, because I am afraid of who will turn up at my table. So I write this email blast for me. Who do you not want at your table? Jesus will continue to invite people to your table that you are angry or uncomfortable with,  or cannot forgive, because Jesus is very serious about this command to forgive those who have sinned against us. We are to consider the love and grace of God for someone we do not like.

I pray for you the prayer of the Apostle Paul for the church he loved: that you can “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” for you and for those in your life who have wronged you so.

We miss you,
Pastor Diane
