Loss of Two Pastors
One of the reasons I became a pastor in the Presbyterian denomination is because of connection. The Presbyterian churches stay connected with each other. Therefore, when one church rejoices, we rejoice with them. When one church grieves, we weep with them.

In the last few weeks, our Presbytery lost two pastors. The pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Globe, Rev. Bill Norton, passed away from a heart attack. Last Friday, the senior pastor of St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Rev. Jim Toole, passed away from cancer. Both pastors went quickly: Rev Norton’s was sudden, Rev Toole was diagnosed in October. He lived only 6 months after diagnosis.

Both of these churches are in deep grief. We know what it is like to lose a pastor. It has been almost 5 years since the sudden death of our senior pastor, Rev. Larry DeLong. As I look back at that time, it was the prayers and support, emails and cards of our Presbytery that upheld us.

So, will you pray with me for these two churches? Pray for their spouses and families. As an associate pastor, I pray especially for Rev. Matt Grover, the associate pastor for St Andrews. He carried the church through Jim’s illness and now he is upholding the church in his death. I can truly say I know what he is going through and what is to come. It was no coincidence when the Presbytery pastors came together to say good-bye to Jim the day after Easter, I sat next to Matt. We were able to talk about our experiences.

Gracious God, we don’t understand your ways, but in the midst of our life, you are with us. For now, that is enough.

Jesus said: I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you also need to love one another. May God give us grace to love one another, to follow in the way of the commandments, and to share His risen life.

From the Canticle of the Sun by Francis of Assisi
O most high, Almighty, good LORD God, to You belong praise, honor and blessing! Praise be for all creatures, especially our brother the sun who brings us the day and light, fair is he, shining with a great splendor. Praise be for our sister the moon, and for the stars which You have set clearly and lovely in heaven. Praise be for our brother the wind, for air, breeze and breath, calms and all kinds of weather by which You uphold life in all creatures. Praise be for our sister water, who is humble and clean, useful and precious to us. Praise be for our brother fire, through whom You give us light in the darkness, he is so very bright, mighty and strong. Praise be for our mother earth, which sustains and keeps us, bringing forth diverse fruits, grasses and flowers of many colors. Praise be for all who pardon one another for love’s sake, who endure weakness and tribulation; blessed are those who endure peaceably. Praise be for death from which no one escapes, and for rising from death to life eternal. Amen
ASSURANCE OF PARDON                       From I John 4: 7-12
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever cannot love, does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed His love among us: God sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: Not that we loved God, but that God loved us and sent God’s Son as sacrifice for our sins. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and God’s love is made complete in us. Friends, I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ: We are forgiven!
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be, Words without end.
Amen, Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

SCRIPTURE                                                        John 15: 1-8
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.  He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.  You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.  Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.  If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.  If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.   This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
