Garden Breakdown, Again

Ebony Patterson's multiple gallery exhibition at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville amply displays the breadth of her creative practice and excellence in working in multiple mediums. In his review of the exhibition new UnderMain contributing writer, Stuart Horodner, finds the compelling and evocative individual works at times compromised by the density of elements of the exhibition's background and display decisions. The exhibition does invite the viewer to approach work that at first glance is colorful and often beautiful but frequently poses much deeper and troubling issues and questions on closer inspection.

A Review of Amy Pleasant: 'Someone Before You'
Institue 193's intimate gallery space provides an excellent venue for Amy Pleasant's spare monochromatic paintings and sculpture of figure fragments. Emily Elizabeth Goodman's review of the exhibition finds the work compelling in asking us to consider how much information we need to understand what is being presented. The exhibition is supplemented by a published monograph accompanying the exhibition which allows for a deeper exploration of the scope of the artist's work.

It Just Kinda Dawned On Us
Due to the grantsmanship and hard work of Co-Publisher Christine Huskisson, and the quality of the writing and content we have been presenting, UnderMain has been awarded a three-year grant to continue our primary programming. Tunis: Dining with Justin
Walter Tunis gets the lowdown from Justin Wells on the unique Wine & Dine show coming up at The Burl. Now an annual event, the show combines a seated dinner with singer-songwriter sets, followed by Wells and his band kicking it up afterwards with their own set. Fellowship, food, and music sounds like a pretty good combo this December.

The M.S. Rezny Gallery in Lexington is closing at the end of December. The gallery had programmed some very inventive and important exhibitions including some of its invitational shows. You can read here a review of a fairly recent exhibition of the work of Martin Beck, written by Emily Elizabeth Goodman who has a review of the current Institute 193 exhibition featured in this newsletter.
