A Baker's Almanac: The Moods of March
In this month's chapter of his series "A Baker's Almanac," contributing writer (and master baker) Jim Betts finds March "a truculent time, fluctuating between periods of glorious, buttery warmth and gusty, stinging cold." Betts captures this annual transition in lichen, "the verdant carpet of spring, maybe more so for the paucity of other color," and a return home to the comforting warmth of fresh-baker Irish Soda Bread. Arts Tasting Menu
We tour three museums in this week’s Tasting Menu. The practice of utilizing postal services, often to get around authoritarian censorship, to produce, distribute, and receive art in the 1960’s is explored at UK Art Museum. Turn of the twentieth century Paris was a vibrant and changing cultural center of Europe, and the exhibition at the Cincinnati Art Museum exhibits work produced by some of its most illustrious period artists. Opening on March 29th at the Speed Art Museum, Yinka Shonibare’s American Library of six thousand books celebrates and probes deeply into this country’s immigrant roots and the national conversation about immigration.

COMING UP

Lots of great stuff! Have you made your reservations for Critical Mass III: In The Mid, on March 16, at The Carnegie in Covington, Kentucky? The panel discussion and conversation will focus on the experience of arts professionals living and working outside the major centers of contemporary art, and will also include presentations about their work by featured artists . Supported by a grant by The Great Meadows Foundation and with the able partnership of our friends at The Carnegie, this promises to be a fun and stimulating event. Free reservations available by emailing reservations@under-main.com.

UnderMain is now featured on regular segments of WEKU's Eastern Standard, hosted by our own Tom Martin. Broadcast on Thursdays at 11AM and rebroadcast at 7PM on Thursdays and Sundays at 6PM. Listen for upcoming segments on Critical Mass III, and the just-announced Railbird Festival in August at Keeneland.

UnderMain is thrilled to announce that Walter Tunis, contributing columnist for the Lexington Herald-Leader, will be a contributing writer for UM. We have long admired Walter's writing about music, not just for his depth of music knowledge but also for his fine writing. We are really looking forward to his regular contributions. Look for an upcoming piece about the Outside The Spotlight jazz series.

With the cutbacks of local news, including arts and culture reporting and coverage throughout the newspaper industry and other news outlets, UnderMain is interested in expanding its reach and coverage of the region's arts and cultural news and events. We would love to hear any ideas that you may have for accomplishing this. Send ideas and suggestions to editorial@under-main.com.

And now more than ever don't forget that UnderMain is a 501 (c)(3). You can contribute to our efforts to keep you informed about arts and culture in Lexington and the region. Donation links on every page at under-main.com. It's 2019. Buckle up.
