The Year That Was
It's been a big year here at Nga Kete! So throughout the last two e-newsletters of 2016, we're bringing back some of our hottest topics of the year!
He Puna Waiora Wellness Centre opened its doors on February 02, 2015, and immediately began exceeding enrolment expectations. A walk-in clinic (Monday) was trialed in August 2015 in an effort to reduce waiting times. It was successful and became permanent. The service also extended its hours and now remains open until 7pm on a Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
In January 2016 Nga Kete and Corrections collaborated to launch a new work and living skills programme to provide important life skills to offenders in Southland. The purpose is to help pre-assessed offenders develop skills that may help them to deal with issues that lead them to offend, to help offenders make positive changes in their lives, and to maintain those changes. Most of the NKMP staff have been involved in the programme and facilitated a one-hour session with the group on topics ranging from cooking skills to life goals.
In May 2016 our Toi Toi Maori Art & Gift Shop moved from Cambridge Arcade to a newly decorated, brighter and larger premises at 119 Dee Street. The shop is in a prime spot on Dee Street close to the city’s large shopping outlets (The Warehouse and Farmers) and right around the corner from NKMP. The shop has also had its own Facebook page since September 2015.
In February 2016 Nga Kete organised the annual Southern Institute of Technology Orientation Week for the fourth time to welcome new and returning students onto campus. The theme was Super Diversity – celebrating all of the cultures that make up the deep south and SIT populous.
Nga Kete’s logo has been redesigned and refreshed, along with the agency’s website.
In April 2016 Nga Kete collaborated with the Invercargill Child and Family Centre to enable better access to health services for whanau in Southland. Collaborating meant both agencies could refer between one another allowing whanau access to therapy services they may not have been able to access otherwise. Nga Kete can refer whanau where the barrier of cost is removed as an enabler to access.
In April 2016 Nga Kete introduced a unique new programme extending its wrap-around service range. Addictions Counsellor Rod Allison developed the new Art Therapy Programme Aronui for people engaging in Nga Kete’s Addictions Service (including alcohol, drug and gambling). The group has been a large success. Some of the feedback has included: “Would like the programme to be longer. Enjoy and appreciate the trust in the room. Has helped me recognise that I’m not the only person going through this.” “This programme was really great – something for us to look forward to each week. Great way to learn about ourselves. I found it very productive. My only criticism is that it needs to go for longer – it’s a shame it’s finished now.” “Yes I liked it, made me think, wish it could have been longer.”
