New BioZone Research Grant & Project Administrator

We are very pleased that Katrina Chu has joined BioZone as our Research Grant & Project Administrator. Katrina is taking over for Vinthiya while she is on maternity leave. Katrina lives in WB 314. Stop by and say hello if you need some help.

Katrina works on overseeing grant administration and various advancement projects within BioZone.  She has a diverse science background, including an M.Sc. in river ecology from the Canadian Rivers Institute at the University of New Brunswick, and an H.B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in evolutionary biology.  Before joining BioZone, Katrina worked as a research associate in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto.
Science Rendezvous

Science Rendezvous is encouraging BioZone to host a booth with hands-on activities or demonstrations, to celebrate this year's theme, Celebrating 150 Years of Canadian Science.  This event will showcase Canadian scientific innovation and discovery!

We are looking for volunteers to help in this community outreach event.  Please let
us know if you have an idea or are interested in participating by February 10, 2017.

News and Events

BioZone Holiday Party

The 2016 BioZone Holiday Party was the place to be on December 5th. The special tango demonstration by Nigel and his wonderful wife, Irene, was breathtaking. As for the food, the potluck competition was very tough this year.  Congratulations to all of the winning chefs and their dishes:

Best Appetizer: Nadia’s bruschetta
Best Veggie Entrée: Ben’s (actually his girlfriend Sarah’s) spinach quiche
Best Meat Entrée: Jon’s pineapple glazed ham
Best Dessert: Sam’s snowman sugar cookies

Also, congratulations to baby Maria for winning the prize for best costume! The night was finished off with a competitive trivia game hosted by Rachel and Sam. Thanks to everyone who attended; it was a wonderful way to end the semester!

BioZone Recognition Awards

Each year, BioZone recognizes the students, research associates, technicians, faculty, and staff that have made an outstanding contribution to the BioZone community. These awards are voted on by all BioZone members.

The 2016 recognition awards were presented to:

  • Mabel Wong for Community Service
  • Kayla Nemr for Technical Excellence
  • The BioZone Mass Spectrometry team (Andrei Starostine and Robert Flick) for Technical Excellence

Awards & Grants

Genome Canada LSARP Grant - Synbiomics

Dr. Emma Master has been awarded one of 13  of Genome Canada's Large-Scale Applied Research Project grants for a project entitled "SYNBIOMICS: Functional genomics and techno-economic models for advanced biopolymer synthesis". Emma is leading a team that includes co-leader Harry Brumer (University of British Columbia), BioZone member Elizabeth Edwards (University of Toronto), Adrian Tsang (Concordia University), and Steve Smith and Warren Mabee (Queen’s University).

SYNBIOMICS, is focused on harnessing the genetic potential of microorganisms to identify and develop new biocatalysts that can be used to create materials from trees, such as resins, coatings, bioplastics and adhesives. The project will also foster small and medium-sized enterprises that will work together synergistically with nearby pulp mills, creating lasting knowledge-based economic opportunities for Canada’s forest sector and rural communities. The project size is $9.5 million for four years.
