December news

At our annual accountability event on 18 November, 100 representatives from charities and fundraising organisations joined us to reflect on our progress over the past year. We discussed some of the key highlights from our annual report and accounts which you can download here

Trust is an issue that has been a focal point of sector conversation this year and was central to discussions in the second part of the event. Our Chair Lord Toby Harris reflects on this theme in his latest blog.

As this is our final newsletter of the 2019 calendar year, on behalf of all the Fundraising Regulator team I'd like to extend warm wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
Our own offices will be closed from 25 December 2019 to 1 January 2020, reopening on 2 January 2020. We look forward to working with you in the New Year.

Trust in fundraisers - reflections on our annual accountability event

Following our annual accountability event Lord Toby Harris reflects on discussions on the topic of trust in fundraisers and what the Fundraising Regulator will be working on this financial year before setting out our second strategic plan. Read more on our website.

Annual report and accounts 2018/19

Last month we published our annual report and accounts for 2018/19, which highlights the progress made to raise standards in fundraising.

The annual report together with a shorter annual review, which focuses on key highlights from this year, is available on the our impact page of our website where you can also view our reports from previous years.

Seven investigation summaries published

We investigate complaints about fundraising where these cannot be resolved by the organisations concerned themselves. Today we publish our second batch of summaries including the names of charities we investigate.

To find out more about why we name the charities we investigate, please read the blog by Catherine Orr, our Head of Casework.

Reminder to registered organisations

We have asked all organisations that are registered with us to complete a short online survey. Your comments will help us understand how you use our services and whether our resources support you to meet the regulatory standards and improve your fundraising practice.

The survey was emailed to our main contact for your organisation on 18 November and closes at 11.59pm on 9 December 2019 - if you haven't yet taken part, please share your views.

Safer giving at Christmas

The Christmas period is strongly associated with generous charitable giving, which is to be celebrated. But it's important for people to make some basic checks before making a donation to make sure they are safely giving to legitimate charities.

Our safer giving guidance provides some top tips to help donors to make informed choices and ensure their generous gifts are used for good.

Fundraising Preference Service update

Members of the public can use the Fundraising Preference Service (FPS) to stop communication from charities they no longer want to hear from. Each month we publish a list of charities that have failed to access and action a FPS request and therefore breached the Code of Fundraising Practice. You can download the latest list from our website.

Charities and political campaigning

With a General Election confirmed for Thursday 12 December 2019 charities should ensure that they campaign responsibly. The Charity Commission has guidance on campaigning and political activity for charities, and supplementary guidance on campaigning and political activity during an election period. Guidance is also available from the Electoral Commission.
