National DSP Week is September 11th-17th

Direct Support Professionals (DSPS) are the backbone of our agency.  They provide direct assistance to the people we support with their goals, health, behavioral support needs, and more! Please take time to thank a DSP today!

Throughout the week we will be celebrating the many amazing things DSP's do by posting videos about them on our Facebook page.

Recap of PCL's Annual Learning Institute:

Last week, PCL completed its 29th annual Learning Institute (ALI). ALI is an opportunity to bring together 125+ team members for a few days of team building, training, and refocusing of our energy and purpose.

We were excited to have Sherrie Anderson, recently returned from Australia, as our keynote speaker. She shared Charting the Life Course: a tool to assist anyone in creating a vision for the future. It is designed to help you think about questions to ask, as well as the choices and options to consider, as one ‘plots a course’ to a full and meaningful life. It is intended to be a starting point, no matter where a person is on their life’s journey.

This was a great learning opportunity and refreshing for PCL to be on the cutting edge, once again, of how we can continue to elevate our services.

PCL’s ALI is time well spent. It allows people to gather from across the agency and leave with a sense of team building, rejuvenated spirits, and a renewed sense of dedication to PCL’s mission and person centered services.

It's all about teamwork!

ALI starts by gathering attendees together in teams of 7 to 8. Most likely, you won't be on a team with anyone you work with on a regular basis. The teams are titled by designated colors, and most people elaborate with a theme they make up.

The Learning Marketplace

Similar to conferences, attendees control their learning experience and choose the classes they want to attend. People can also organize their own classes if they have something they want to share.

Learning opportunities included: improvements in direct services, personal growth, improving health, and review/feedback on PCL’s board directives, to name a few.
Bring on the Competition!

A large focus of our ALI time is team building. As PCL serves people in more than 90 different homes/settings, we rely on teams to be strong, resilient, and the embodiment of PCL culture. This year, among other activities, we were excited to debut our human foosball competition! It was a huge hit!

Then, there was the teamwork marble race, called "Chain Reaction"... which was more exciting than anyone anticipated it being! All the teams are divided into two super teams. Each team has their own small section taped off on one of the two sides and are given random materials to work with (like toilet paper rolls, a funnel, pipe cleaner, plastic tubes, toy tracks, etc). Then, teams have to work together with other teams within their super team to create a long device through which a marble can successfully pass through from one end to the other. At the end, the two super teams compete against each other in a marble race, provided that the two super teams were able to create a device that a marble could pass through all the way.

Stay tuned for next week's Monday Message!
