A year of change.

At the end of 2018 we started doing things slower and wound down like an old grandpa clock.  There were many work functions, last meetings until only family get-togethers and -feasts were on the calendar.  After the New Year, an invisible Hand wound us all up again and gave us strength to start the New Year.  A Year with such potential!

Some holiday news

Our road trip started on the 20th December.

Bellville –> Cradock
We went past Ashton where my grandma used to live next to the road.  The corner stone of her house is still there in the field, just before you enter Ashton.  My mom told me that my grandma used to sell milk tart to the farmers who drove pass her house.  Her little bit of savings were kept in an old stocking hanging above the Aga stove!

Cradock, in the Easter Cape, is Franco’s hometown.  This is also the place where many of the treasures that we have in the Deli come from.  Other people’s junk has always been my treasures!

From Cradock (with Franco’s mom for Christmas) –> Coffee Bay, Transkei Skeleton Coast
We had some Deli products still to eat as the little town of Coffee Bay does not even have a SPAR.  Note:  Pack in everything if you are planning a trip to Coffee Bay!

After 2 days in Coffee Bay –> Howick, Natal Midlands
The Natal Midlands is super green with lots of shops for browsing.  Here we found the Meat Safe Cupboard (or chicken coop as some people call her).  This little cupboard is full of history and were used in the 1950s before fridges were common.  We are using it to keep our Sour Dough and Ciabatta breads – look out for her when you visit the Deli again!

Howick –> Linden, Johannesburg
After 3 days in Howick we took the N3 to Johannesburg, all the way back to my sis Irma in Linden.  After a week or so there, it was back home again.  Lovely visit, lots of eating, therefore our New Year Health Focus below!

New Year Health Focus
Franco and I usually start in January with a renewed focus to eat healthy (who doesn’t?!)  We cut on starch, sweets, alcohol and eat only meat over weekends.  This way we try to get the kilograms back in check!  Luckily the Deli has lots of suitable products and I only have to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.  Below is a few of the products that we use out of the Deli ourselves:
  • Free range chicken fillets @ R75 per kilogram
  • Red Quinoa @ R81 per kilogram (good alternative for rice and pasta)
  • Chick Peas @ R49 per kilogram (high in plant-based proteins)
  • Olive oil @ R85 per liter (good source of anti-oxidants and healthy fats)
  • Eggs @ R20 for 12 (alternative for meat)
  • Good Gut @ R50 per liter (pro-biotic flavoured water which is good for your tummy)
  • Kombucha @ R40 per 750 ml (fermented tea which is good for detox and weight loss)

Deli Hours
With the New Year we also have the amazing opportunity to expand the Deli.  Our new hours are as follows
  • Mondays: Closed
  • Tuesdays & Wednesdays: 10am to 4pm.  Available on appointment for group functions.  Ideal for meetings, cell group or any group functions.
  • Thursdays: 10am to 6pm. “Restaurant” as well as Deli sales.  Pensioners get their plunger coffee/tea free!
  • Fridays: 10am to 6pm. “Restaurant” as well as Deli sales.  Ideal for business people who want a quiet area to discuss work over a cup of coffee or to have a small meeting.  Or to use our free WiFi and work in the garden!
  • Saturdays: 10am to 4pm. “Restaurant” as well as Deli sales – as normal
*I write Restaurant in quotation mark as you know that we do not have a real restaurant, we cook from our ordinary kitchen.  One of the 81 Google Users who mostly give us a 4 or 5 star ratings said that our menu can do with some work!  I wonder if he/she has seen our kitchen!

Thank you for your support and encouragement during 2018.  It made it possible (with lots of Grace from our heavenly Father) that I could start in 2019 to manage, market and monitor the Deli.

Greetings from our home to yours!
Our dinner in Coffee Bay, which consisted of deli products and a delicious bread that we were able to get from one of the local restaurants.
