Hi there! And a special “hello” to all who are receiving our Deli Newsletter for the first time.
This weekend we left the Deli for the first time in 4 years in the hands of our very competent team. A big thank you to Marco, Liezie, Anzel, Kia, Bernadette and Florence who kept the ball rolling while Franco and I attended a family wedding in Kimberley.
The road trip gave us a chance to look at farm stalls, deli’s and small shops – all in order to get ideas to make our Deli even better. On the way back, we stopped at Skimmelberg Organic Rooibos and Buchu farm, between Clanwilliam and Citrusdal. The aim was to negotiate the possibility of stocking their Rooibos espresso (for rooibos cappuccinos) as well as selling their Buchu water. The Buchu industry is fascinating! The green leaves are harvested and distilled in a huge pot in order to obtain the Buchu oil. This oil is used in the food-, perfume- and health-industries. The Buchu water is therefor a side product obtained from the pure distilled water, full of all the good Buchu qualities. You can drink Buchu water for your kidneys and bladder, it is excellent for detox but pregnant ladies and moms who breastfeed should pass.
The gravel road from Calvinia to Skimmelberg
We were very surprised to hear that the same Skimmelberg farm is featured in chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s latest book. He is in love with South African dishes and products and made special contact with the owners in order to stock their products in his Michelin star restaurant in Niece, France.
Rooibostee being dried in the sun in large "pans"
So, after the long gravel road, it was all worth it! We are soon going to stock Rooibos Espresso and Buchu Water (and maybe a few more teas)!
Functions at the Deli
We have decided to do all future functions on Tuesdays to Fridays and Saturdays only from 16:00 till 18:00. This will free up the Deli garden and stoep for our regulars on a Saturday. Sorry if we did not have a table for you the last time you were here, it should be better in future.
Our ostrich mince is from today (while we have stock) available at R70 per kg. This is a fantastic price – please inform your friends.
Here is our newest competition! Send us a review of a specific Deli product with a photo where you were using it to WhatsApp nr 083 294 2015 (Anneke’s nr). We will announce the winner here in the newsletter and on Facebook. The lucky monthly winner will get a Deli box to the value of R200! You can send as many reviews as you want. Remember that all reviews must have your name, the review of the product as well as a photo – WhatsApp it to 083 294 2015 to win.
