These Black trans womxn have been killed since the beginning of 2019. The majority of these murders occurred recently, just in the month of June.

Our role at Terra Incognita Media is to examine the outdoor industry through a feminist lens. To us, that means we look at the ways race, class, and gender impact what we see and experience in relation to the outdoor industry, and the construct of wilderness.

This month has us thinking a lot about Pride, of course, and we are noticing that many companies and organizations in the outdoor industry are hanging up Pride flags, and giving discounts here and there to LGBTQIA+ communities, and perhaps providing other kinds of assistance and support. But we are asking who’s visible, who’s getting support, validation, affirmation, and acknowledgement throughout the entire year? What policies are in place at these organizations and companies year round to protect and uplift Black trans womxn?

Corporations will not bring us liberation. Corporations CANNOT bring us liberation. Liberation is anti-capitalism, anti-police, anti-white supremacy, and anti-patriarchy.

We are churning behind the scenes and working on forming an official non-profit, so that we can sustainably pay ourselves and our contributors for our work! Capitalism means we all need money to survive and we want to do that as ethical and equitable as possible. We are taking our time to be intentional with our ever-evolving platform. Your three co-conspirators meet weekly every Friday to brainstorm, exchange ideas, check in, and re-ground in our mission. Find out more about our team here! If you'd like to join us, we are looking to add more co-conspirators to our team. Find out how to apply here.

Happening September 27-29th 2019

The Refuge Outdoor Festival is creating a space to explore and celebrate diversity, nature, and life.

A 3-day camping experience geared toward people of color. All are welcome, people of color and allies. Imagine a family reunion, summer camp, and rejuvenating retreat rolled in one! This festival is a safe space for all participants, with daily outdoor recreation activities, community conversations, nightly concerts, and art exhibits. All levels of outdoor enthusiasts are welcome.

We want to highlight Kima Nieves' essay, "Vegan Activism and Anti-Indigeneity: Violating Indigenous Food Sovereignty," as well as our previous interview with Jolie Varela of Indigenous Women Hike in honor of IWH returning from their trip to Peru. From their Instagram page:

"Experiencing these sacred lands and learning from the First caregivers of these lands has been an emotional and beautiful journey. We are so grateful to be welcomed and to be planning for future connections with our Quechua sisters.⁣"

Be sure to follow along for educational posts and beautiful images that honor and uplift the land that holds all of us.
#StopGlorifyingJohnMuir  Rock this tee and start some necessary conversations. Choose from tees, tanks, long-sleeve shirts, v-necks, baseball tees, and sweatshirts!

We want to encourage our community to help us stop the culture of exploiting trauma. Manuela Guillén, an artist and teacher who we follow on Instagram, has educated us on the tragic and horrifying death of Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez, 25, and his daughter, Valeria, 2. This father and daughter are among too many victims of our country's heinous xenophobia and white supremacy.

Please only share humanizing images of the family. The 24-hour news cycle has the great potential to de-sensitive us from the horrors of our world. We need to engage and be knowledgeable, we need not look away from the ills of oppression, but we can do this without exploiting death. No human being is illegal, and borders are a construct that shouldn't exist.

You can follow Guillén for meaningful illustrations to share and amplify this.

Call for submissions for the Terra Zine. The theme is ETHEREAL. More info and details are coming! For now, check out our general guidelines. Submit your art, photography, writing, poetry, photo-journalism, etc!

Thank you for being in community with us! We have to constantly fundraise to keep our authentic content free from corporate sponsorship.

If you're able to make a gift of $5 or $15 or even $50 please do! Your support truly means the world to us.

Dedicated to delivering fierce, feminist media no matter what, your co-conspirators in gratitude and solidarity,

Erin, Brittney, and Keithlee
