Promoting the Development of Fine Motor Skills

Occupational Therapist Patty Obrzut has shared a two-page handout reviewing the developmental sequence of fine motor skills from in utero to 16 months of age.
The Development of Grasp
In the webinar The Comprehending Hand: Fine Motor Development, Patty Obrzut and Jessica McCavit present information about how an infant develops the ability to grasp.   They share information how various disabilities, such as cerebral palsy, influence a child’s ability to grasp, and, lastly, they identify Active Learning strategies and activities that encourage the development of grasp.  Videos of children are used to illustrate the various stages of fine motor development and activities that you may wish to try with the learners you work with.

Rice Tray with Water

This boy is developmentally at the level of a two month old and providing him with “scratching” activities encourages his participation. This activity provides an opportunity for him to move through a variety of developmental levels, such as potentially grasping the rice, the washcloth, or moving one hand to the other.

Practicing Grasping Skills in a Little Room

The boy in this video is in a Little Room where he accidentally, or purposefully, grasps and keeps, or grasps and releases objects. On several occasions, he also grasps and brings an object to his mouth. All of these movements are increasingly higher developmental skills. This child’s pushing and batting motions, with increased opening of the hand, allow grasping to occur. Note that this Little Room is well equipped with materials that respond appropriately to pushing and batting.

Massager on Hand

This boy's muscle tone is causing flexion of the wrists and elbows, but he is able to open his index finger and thumb when he is given materials that motivate him to explore. Note that the adult should not move the massager, or “chase” the hand. Instead, allow the child to move the hand independently away from, and toward, an object, like the mini-massager.
