Desert Shield and Desert Storm Honor Ceremonies

The men and women who have served in our armed forces deserve to be recognized for their willingness to defend our country against those who would harm us. On August 27th, I will host Desert Shield and Desert Storm Honor Ceremonies in Greenville and Charleston. Since being elected to federal office, I have hosted several honor ceremonies for South Carolina’s veterans in an effort to show appreciation for all that they and their families have sacrificed. In 2012, World War II Veterans were honored; in 2013, I held two ceremonies celebrating our Korean War era veterans;  and in 2014, our Vietnam Veterans were honored.

Each veteran will receive a special Senatorial Certificate of Appreciation, as well as a pin. All interested veterans should register with my office by visiting  scott.senate.gov/veterans.

    The URW President's Letter

In July, most of us go through our closets and find those rarely worn red, white and blue pieces of clothing that only Independence Day can force out from their hiding places. We make patriotic desserts with blueberries and strawberries that we found in Southern Living magazine, and we plan gatherings with family and friends in the back yard, at the beach or anywhere close to the water and a good breeze.

In 1776, in a letter to his wife Abigail, John Adams wrote:

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore."

It’s remarkable how spot-on John Adams’s prediction was, isn’t it?  Aside from the grand celebration now occurring on the fourth day of July instead of the second, everything Adams predicted about how we would commemorate the day is still true, except for one thing:  the “solemn acts of Devotion to God Almighty” are missing.
It seems not a week goes by that we don’t hear of a terrorist act that has been committed on the other side of the world or right here at home.  These are troubled times we are living in. Our hearts go out to those, both here and abroad, who have suffered greatly from the hands of God’s enemies. Let’s join together in an act of devotion to God by praying—for our great country and for the world.  “Solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty” are needed, now more than ever.

Ladies:

Just a reminder to you and all your clubs' members, but especially to you as leaders, that disparaging remarks or publications involving Republican candidates for office is not only prohibited in the SCFRW by-laws, but also the NFRW by-laws, and I'm betting in your clubs' by-laws as well. We will need ALL the Republican votes we can get in November, and the time is now to wear a positive attitude and show the opposition that we will not be defeated this election cycle!

As leaders of the Republican party, you need to hold yourselves to a higher standard than your membership.  Remember, you are the role model and example in a very contested nominee selection process.
Thank you for always being an upstanding "Republican back-bone."

Gratefully,
Bev Brady, President
