and most recently Congresswomen Marcy Kaptur and Debbie Dingell, representing all of the western basin of the lake, wrote the U.S. EPA director telling her to declare it impaired!
None of that would have happened without an informed and active public -- people who care, like you!
You may know that it was Obama's executive order to start cleaning up the Chesapeake that overcame decades of delay caused by failed voluntary agreements and opposition from powerful private interests. The President can do the same for Lake Erie.
ACLE is asking...no pleading... that as soon as you finish this paragraph to PLEEEEZE take just one minute and call the White House comment line at 202-456-1111and say "Lake Erie needs an Executive Order just like the one President Obama issued for Chesapeake Bay."
tick...tick...tick...60 seconds going by...
Make the call? Good On You!
If not --- get back there and do it!
OK? Read on.
To be a Real Friend of Lake Erie(TM) all you have to do is make two more quick calls
1) (419) 255-9623 Tell Marcy Kaptur "Thank You" and urge her to tell the President that Lake Erie needs its own Executive Order
2) (202) 224-2315 Tell Sen. Sherrod Brown to get on board with what Kaptur has already done and get the same message to the President.
Some of our friends, like Pam Taylor in Lenawee County, Michigan, Sandy Bihn with Lake Erie Waterkeeper, and untold others have worked on behalf of Lake Erie for years. The energy and dedication of many ACLE members in just a few months has helped generate the critical mass needed to achieve the progress of this last month.
Momentum is clearly on our side...but time isn't. So please, ask two friends to do as you've just done and make a call. Lake Erie is now on these officials' radar like it hasn't been since Toledo's water was shut off. We have to keep it there.
Thank you!
And remember... DON'T GIVE UP THE LAKE!
