Our First Newsletter!

Dear PLC Supporters,

We are excited to launch our monthly newsletter! Our goal through this communication is to keep you informed about the landscape of literacy in our community and throughout the county. Each month, we plan to spotlight one of our Partner organizations, which provide services in support of struggling students and their families.

We have recently discovered through conversations with our volunteers, our board and our Partners how we are each  encouraged by the stories that our friends and family tell us of volunteering and giving back. Playing off this idea, we are launching a new campaign entitled "Be Part of Your Story". Every volunteer, student, parent and principal has a story behind their involvement. We want to share them.

Through these stories we hope to draw more people into the movement for Bay Area literacy. Thank you for continually supporting our students and schools through your own literacy narratives.

Dagmar's Story

After retiring from her post as the head of the Stanford English Department, Dagmar Logie was looking for a way to give back to her community. When she found that Reading Partners was operating walking distance from her home, she had to give it a try. Dagmar and her husband now tutor together under three different organizations. It's safe to say she has never looked back.

Do you tutor? If so, we’d love to hear your story. We believe hearing stories from volunteers can inspire others to step forward and join us.

Partner Spotlight: Project Read

The start of the school year is the perfect opportunity to get involved and tutor just a hour a week with a student. Project Read starts its community volunteer training on August 11 at the Redwood City Downtown Library, Project Read is a free, volunteer-based literacy program serving adults, children and families.  Our intergenerational programs are designed to break the cycle of illiteracy by surrounding adults, youth and families with literacy services that promote education and a lifelong love of learning.
