Floral One & Two

Thermographic embossing with gouache

Contours of Gold

Britt Ford is a do-it-yourselfer. Despite growing up taking many art/creative classes, Britt did not go to college for art but instead studied at Dickinson College and graduated with a degree in economics. Yet with a drive to change the art world and a belief that everyone should have access to art and not have to break the bank to start their collection she followed her dream. She has been fortunate to combine her education with her passion for art and bring affordable artwork to retailers and her customers.

The medium Britt works in is all her own. Frustrated with the mass-produced two-dimensional maps available in the marketplace, she developed a style of modern cartography by creating Hoboken maps and illustrations utilizing a unique heat-embossing technique. She says, “I’ve taken a medium that is typically seen in hobby craft with pre-made stamps and created a process of thermographic embossing from a design I create in Illustrator (Adobe’s vector-based graphics program).”

Britt makes all her pieces in small batches by hand at her studio in Hoboken. She adds, “Customers are really drawn to my maps because there is nothing like my medium in the retail market and not one map is the same.” All her pieces are on 100% recycled paper with most coming in frames that she sources from local antique and thrift stores and refinished as needed including custom glass and mats.

Her most recent series consists of floral gouache thermographic embossings shown here with Floral One and Floral Two. She considers these as truly one-of-a-kind as she only creates one of each. The aesthetic of these pieces combines her love of Suzani embroidery, Turkish floral motifs, and the gold embossing 3D texture. What is also special about this collection is that they are all hand painted in vivid colors. Britt comments, “When I started creating these pieces I was doing them in watercolor, I then stumbled upon gouache and fell in love with the deeper pigment saturation.”
