Today, January 16, 2023 we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King’s National Day of Service.

His youngest daughter, Bernice King spoke at the Rotary Presidential Peace Conference in 2017. She challenged Rotarians to think differently about how they think about peace and how they interact with those with which they don't necessarily agree."Every member of our world society, even our adversaries and opponents, is worthy of being looked upon with dignity."

At our Tuesday luncheon meetings we recite the 4-way test.  As we spend today celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, let us remember that the ideals that unite us in Rotary fellowship, were very similar to the principles that Dr. King spent a life time fighting for.  Ultimately giving his life for on April 4, 1968.

1.    Is it the TRUTH?
2.    Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3.    Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4.    Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotary International President-elect R. Gordon R. McInally revealed the 2023-24 presidential theme, Create Hope in the World.. McInally, a member of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland, asked members to restore hope by helping the world heal from destructive conflicts and create lasting change within ourselves.

Let us take some time today to give honor to the work that Martin Luther King Jr. did and to ponder on the work that we have left to do.

The Rotary Club of Greenville started “Read-to-Me” Program in 1995. In 2014 the club had approximately 50 Rotarians reading aloud to children at 10 sites in Greenville. The newest site is Alexander Elementary School.

One of our club’s favorite Projects each year is working with Alexander Elementary School in Greenville. Our past President, Scott Powell, connected with the school a few years ago to determine if we could help them. What started as providing Meals for the Teachers a few times during the year has grown to multiple activities with the Staff and Students.
