“I Don’t Mean To Offend You But…”

Panel Discussion/Q&A and Community Meal, Saturday, November 17th, 3pm, Atonement Lutheran Church, St. Cloud

The Central MN community has changed. Long-time residents in our area can feel fearful and angry about their new neighbors that may look and act different from them. There are many people that have questions about the Muslim religion – this panel discussion and Q&A session seeks to answer those questions.

We believe the best place to find out about your Muslim neighbors is from your Muslim neighbors themselves! Join four of your Muslim neighbors (Zurya Anjum, Aref Hassan, Abdurahman Ibrahim, and Ayan Omar) to learn about their life and faith and to have them answer your questions.

This is a free, public event – all are welcome. Atonement Lutheran Church will also be providing a meal (catered by New York Gyro) after the event for up to 200 people – make sure to sign up so that your spot is secured for the event and the meal!

Feeding Families Partnership

Volunteer Meeting: Monday, October 28th, 6:30pm, Celebration Lutheran Church, Sartell

A new partnership has been formed between Feeding Area Children Together (FACT), #unitecloud, and Celebration Lutheran Church to collect and distribute grocery items to fill the pantries of local families in need. Together, we can make a huge difference!

The Need: 1 in every 5 children in Central Minnesota are not sure where their next meal will come from. Hunger is a huge problem facing many families in St Cloud, MN. During Winter Break, families facing food insecurities often suffer the most. The cold makes it hard to get to food pantries and soup kitchens, the schools that offer breakfast and lunch and snacks are closed. Leading up to Winter Break many of our teachers report a large increase in anxiety among their students facing food insecurity, homelessness, and other family transitions.

YOU CAN HELP! We need volunteers to help us organize, collect, sort, and distribute food donations to local families in December. If you are willing to help us, please sign up to attend this important Team Meeting! We need individuals of all ages willing to help with this massive project! PLEASE NOTE: This is not a gathering to collect donations -- just to collect and organize volunteer teams! You do not need to make a donation to be a team member in this important community project!

Don’t Let Yourself be Robbed of a “Mama-Bear” Experience

So when I hear politicians or prominent media personalities using words like “infestation”, “fake” or “not ours” to describe people, especially children, my blood begins to boil. Why? Because this type of language is meant to emotionally separate you from vulnerable people in desperate need of Mama Bears.

My Diasporic Diary

By Anisa Hagi-Mohamed

The creator of this journal, Anisa Hagi-Mohamed, is a 1.5 generation Somali immigrant residing in Central MN! She created this journal for fellow diaspora, wherever they are in the world, and whatever their origins may be. The inspiration behind this journal is Anisa's countless life experiences of feeling lost in translation, of lacking a sense of belonging and facing unique diasporic challenges but also her burning desire to document her journey.

It’s not often we are asked about our perspectives on having complex identities or our sense of belonging; our traditions, family, food, and cultures – especially not in one sitting, and never in one reflective journal. It is Anisa's hope that you will find love, healing, and self-discovery within the pages of your journal.
