BFI’s Team of Seven, Tour de Force!

By Executive Director, Julie Marner

Hello BFI Family! I am overjoyed to tell you about our recent visit to Burundi. We know not everyone has the opportunity to travel across the globe, but our deep gratitude goes to our BFI Volunteers who made the time and took extraordinary effort to make the journey. It takes a lot of pretzel and peanut snacks on the plane to reach East Africa.

Our 10 days in Burundi were packed! After traveling 40 hours, we hit the ground running with a Skype session between Hewlett Packard in San Diego and our BFI IT Department. Thanks to HP, we are launching a pilot project with off-line curriculum which can reach students in remote villages across Burundi.
From there it led to a BFI Health Education Committee meeting and our schedule never stopped until we returned to the airport to fly home. BFI Music Volunteer, Susanna Han, told me, “Julie, you really pack it in.” We DO pack it in because our projects electrify thousands across the country and visiting these sites fuels our team forward to do even more.
Check out our full story by visiting the BFI website. It’s thanks to you, our great supporters, that we continue to launch youth initiatives across Burundi and empower women and families to achieve success through collaboration. Together We Can.

English Learning Never Stops!

While kids in the U.S. and Burundi return back to school, our BFI English Clubs continue to run across Burundi all 52 weeks of the year! Why? Because Burundians know that speaking basic English offers them a chance for better business opportunities within Burundi and greater access to possibilities in the
East African Community of Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. This is why BFI’s classrooms continue to be packed! Fortunately, they are packed not just with English learning but with joy, laughter, encouragement and with friendship. BFI unites and educates thousands of Burundians, thanks to you, our steadfast supporters!

Remember the song, the Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round?! Well, our BFI jeeps that visit all 18 provinces training teachers and visiting students also need to go round and round. Our teachers and students need ongoing support.

BFI School Supply List:

  • $25 toward Chalk – for our blackboards, of course!
  • $50 toward Beginner English Manuals – to reach more clubs, because the growing is on fire.
  • $100 for Fuel - to keep our jeep moving forward and in great shape for our invaluable leaders.
  • $500 toward Tuition Costs – for our 40 college students training to become amazing Burundian citizens.
