So What’s So Important About Speaking English?

On April 23, both the birth and death date of William Shakespeare, the United Nations celebrates English. Why? Because English is the “universal language”, and one of the 6 languages that the UN celebrates in recognition of one of its Core Values: multiculturalism.
To Burundians, English is the critical key to connecting with life outside Burundi. It allows them to be vital, contributing partners in the East Africa Community. It allows them to form bridges with the rest of the world so that they can share their rich heritage of song and dance, art and clothing as well as their culture of hospitality, respect and friendship. It gives them a chance to unite and commune together on a whole new level. It gives them the opportunity to be well educated so they can contribute to their country’s economy.
This is WHY WE TEACH ENGLISH in Burundi. And we are pleased to share in the UN’s celebration of ENGLISH LANGUAGE DAY.

Sports, Culture & Friendship, Oh My!

BFI English Clubs are more than just learning English. Most recently, our BFI English Clubs have found a way to inspire students and create a little friendly competition through sport and culture. We have over 156 various sports teams consisting of soccer, handball, volleyball, basketball, drummers, dance teams, acrobatics, karate, and even Taekwondo! Each region has its own special team that gets to compete against the others and show off their provincial spirit. Your donation gives Burundian students opportunities to bond over shared interests and empower each other by working together.
