Hi everyone and welcome back to term three!  I trust you all had a great break.  I chatted to lots of the students on Monday and they were very excited to be back...I'm sure you're just as happy as they are! There is a lot happening this term so please make sure you check in with this newsletter regularly (they are sent out every two weeks from today) and take the time to read the school calendar as well - you will find the details of this at the bottom of the newsletter).  As always, if you have any questions then you can always talk to your child's teacher, or write me an email and I can help you out (  I would also like to welcome Victoria Burton who will be working with us of the next 13 weeks.  Victoria was on a placement in the Middle Pod last term and is joining us as a Release Teacher while we run some extension and support classes for Literacy and Mathematics.

Supporting your Child's Learning
I really believe that by working as a team (the Teachers, parents and students) we can make a real difference in the development of your child.  One of the ways we can do this is making sure you have the information YOU need to supporting learning at home.  Last term you would have received notification of your child's National Standards progress (if your child has been at school for more than one year).  This term you will be invited to Parent Teacher conferences that support these latest reports.  Please remember that these are not compulsory, but they are designed to help you understand your child's progress.  They are a great opportunity to find out what you can do to support their learning at home as well.  I would also suggest that you click on THIS LINK and read the corresponding year level document for your child.  These documents outline simple, but effective, tasks that you can do at home to further strengthen your child's learning
Student Safety - dropping off and collecting students from school.
You will have received an email from me regarding an incident involving students and an adult around Ngaio School today.  This is the second such incident in the past 4 weeks.  If you did not receive the email, then please contact me so I can check the details we have for you on our systems.

It is timely for me to remind you of our procedures for dropping off and collecting students from school.

Our New Entrants, Years 1, 2 and 3 students CANNOT be released from their class unless an adult is there to collect them.  This means they are collected from the classroom and is done for the children's safety.  This is a system we have had in place for several years.  Years 4, 5 and 6 students are able to make their own way home, but I suggest you speak to them about ensuring they stay on the agreed paths home and do not deviate from these.

We also work right up until 3pm, so if you child is coming out of class "late" this is because they are in lessons until this time.

If you would like to discuss any of this then please email me or drop in for a chat.  Our goal is to ensure your children are safe while in our care.

Kind regards,
The Inspire Team.
We have a small core of parents, grandparents and volunteers from outside the school who have been working on the bush track below the school. There is plenty more to do and some really exciting plans for building an outdoor classroom and opening the area up for children to use more.
We plan to have occasional working bees, that might include bush clearing, weeding and even some simple construction.
I am compiling an email list of who would like to be kept in the loop about plans and dates of working bees. Please let me know if you would like to be added to that list. There will be no obligation to turn out all the time, but it will ensure information will go out in a targeted way to interested people, rather than to the whole school community every time.
Thank you
Khandallah School’s book week:  Where Words Come to Life.
You are invited to join the Khandallah School parent community and listen to John from The Children’s Bookshop in Kilbirnie speak about his love of reading and the joy and excitement it brings to children's lives.  CLICK HERE for further details.
Mrs Gorrie and the Matiu team have settled in nicely to their new class.  You'd be hard pressed to know they have only been there for 5 school days!  I called in on Monday and everyone was enjoying the story being read.
Miss Urry is back with us this term and she is VERY excited about being here after her term-long sabbatical.  Her classroom looks a bit different from everyone else' should call in and chat to her about what changes have been made.
