On LA's anxious streets, St. Mother Teresa’s missionaries bring life

Several “ladies” live in the convent at St. Emydius in Lynwood with the Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity. Angelus writer Steve Lowery was granted a rare insider’s look at the everyday work of the “daughters” of Mother Teresa. Christmas came early for a local Catholic school seventh-grader. Jacob Cruz of St. Philomena School in Carson traveled with his family to Washington, D.C., where he was named one of two grand prize winners Dec. 3 in an annual Christmas artwork contest sponsored by the Missionary Childhood Association. Cruz’s drawing, which depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus against a colorful background, will be featured on the official Pontifical Mission Societies Christmas card this year. In addition, two other students from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles were also honored as national finalists: eighth-graders Mina Michalski of St. Francis de Sales School in Sherman Oaks and Justina Yoon of Beatitudes of Our Lord School in La Mirada. (CNS photo/Tyler Orsburn)
