The Question: Replace or Repair Australia’s Ageing Infrastructure.


Many of Australia’s bridges, sewage and water systems, and other infrastructure are reaching the end of their serviceable lives and the choice for government is whether to replace or extend their lives. It has been reported that this applies to over 600 bridges in New South Wales alone (in the U.S.A. more than 60,000 steel bridges are structurally deficient) and our sewage system requires large sums of money to replace or carryout essential repairs. This is a worldwide problem and fortunately there are new materials and modern processes which can provide the answers.

Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer materials are a prime example of these new materials.




The recent successful repair of the historic Münchenstein Bridge which crosses the Birs river in Switzerland where two girders, the most critical elements against fatigue on the 45.2 metre steel bridge, were strengthened using carbon fibre reinforced polymer materials.

1-HOUR FIX: SLAB LIFTING ON CHINA HEAVY FREIGHT LINE BY PUMPING POLYURETHANE FOAM AND JACKING THE SLAB BACK TO LEVEL

This Prime Resins Case Study illustrates the benefits of injecting Polyurethane resin foam to lift/jack concrete slabs back to level. In this case a heavy freight line was jacked back to level at a very low cost with a minimum of disruption to rail services. The slab jacking work took just 45 minutes and fully loaded freight train services resumed within an hour. This simple process avoided:

  • prolonged shutdown of services,
  • removal of facilities i.e. rail tracks,
  • demolition of concrete slabs,
  • major excavation,
  • replacement and stabilisation of sub-base,
  • replacement of concrete slabs,
  • reinstallation of facilities i.e. rail tracks,
  • resumption of services after prolonged shutdown.
There are many applications for this jacking process where concrete slabs have moved out of level in water, sewage, road and rail infrastructure, commercial buildings, factories, residentials, carparks, bridges, footpaths….etc. The process can also be used to fill voids, such as, behind retaining walls, under wash-outs…etc.


CHINA FRIEGHT LINE TRACKS REQUIRE PRECISE SLAB LIFT

Project: Chinese Railway Bureau | Chaolianggou Tunnel, Hebei province, northeast of Beijing, China

Problem: A Prime Resins customer was engaged to repair a section of rail freight tracks inside the Chaolianggou Tunnel that had settled due to erosion around the concrete track slab. A seven-meter section of track had settled approximately 7-10 mm, enough to cause track vibration and force trains to slow down. The situation could have grown into a potential derailment risk. Uniform, precise lift was imperative in this job.
