HYDROPHILIC VS HYDROPHOBIC: WHICH ONE TO USE?

Chemical grouts are a cost-effective solution for many leak sealing, void filling and soil stabilization projects. Choosing the right material and installing it correctly are critical to the long-term success of the job. Chemical grouts fall into two classes: hydrophilic grouts that have an affinity for water and seek it out and hydrophobic grouts that repel water and tend to resist moving toward wet areas. This means that they are better suited for some applications than others. Knowing which to use and why is critical if you are using chemical grouts.

CASE STUDY: Using Polyurethane Foam to Fill Voids and Lift a Settled Pump Pit

Precision Lift #4.0 was used to lift the corner, but before that could happen, voids beneath the pit had to be filled and the weak substrate had to be strengthened. The void filling and permeation grouting were done with Prime Flex 920, a hydrophobic, super low viscosity polyurethane that reacts with water and expands to form a closed cell, watertight, rigid foam. (It is also NSF/ANSI 61 compliant.)
