Suvarna's Story: A Dedicated Girl Who Rose Out of Tragedy

In the humid village of Pothavaram, Suvarna’s story begins with tragedy. She was born to Ramesh and Bhavani, a young couple in Hyderabad. Ramesh worked as a daily wage laborer in the city center. Soon after Suvarna’s birth, Ramesh was killed at a train track crossing, leaving Suvarna’s mother, Bhavani, alone.

Stricken with stress and grief, Bhavani left Suvarna with Ramesh’s mother, Leelamma, and eloped with another man, moving to another village and starting a new life.  This “starting over" is all too common in rural Indian life when tragedy comes.

Leelamma desired nothing more than to give Suvarna a happy life, but she is elderly and chronically ill, unable to provide more than rice and basic ingredients for simple meals. Occasionally, Suvarna’s uncle would send bags of rice, but otherwise, Leelamma and Suvarna were alone in the world.

That’s when Covenant Child Development Centers, and the local pastor in Suvarna’s village, stepped in.

As Suvarna grew up, Leelamma came to hear about the local CCDC. She approached the center and told them Suvarna’s story. CCDC immediately accepted Suvarna into the program, and Suvarna's hopes for making something of her life were suddenly a possibility.

Suvarna is now enrolled in 7th grade at a local English-medium school. Her favorite subject in school is science – hands on experiments are her forte. Her new dream is to become a doctor, but she is also considering a career as a science teacher.
At the CCDC center, Suvarna excels too. She’s mature beyond her years and a talented student. When she’s with her fellow students, she loves to play games and team up to get through homework. Every day, she makes her grandmother proud of the young woman she is becoming. CCDC is proud of Suvarna, too.

Without your support, children like Suvarna would never be able to go to school. Without education, Suvarna would have likely married as a child and been forever ensnared in the clutches of poverty. Now, she has a chance at a brighter future, both for herself and for her grandmother.

Thank you for believing in Suvarna and hundreds of children like her.  Your gift makes it possible for CCDC to continue saving Suvarna from tragedy and offering a life of hope and a future.
