monthly newsletter  //  september 2016

This month, we'd like to highlight Jake Davis and his cooking skills!  Jake has been working with Jess, his personal support worker, to learn new techniques and try new recipes.

As seen in this picture, Jake is making a whole chicken on the grill. First, Jake coated the chicken with olive oil, Cajun spices and herbs. Then, he cooked the chicken on the grill with a can of Coca-Cola inside it to give it a unique flavor and keep the meat from getting dry.

Jake and Jess have also grilled asparagus, roasted potatoes, made spring rolls, and used the food processor.  Jake likes to find unique ingredients at stores like World Harvest and Strawberry Fields, and he just recently created his own milkshake recipe!

Way to go, Jake!

We are gearing up for our first Monthly Meeting back from the summer break! Self-advocates and family members will be meeting together. We are excited to be hosting presenters from Mosaic At Home, a CILA provider considering coming to the Champaign area. Mosaic is one of only a few providers in the state that help to create and run Host Family CILAs. This is service model that allows individuals to live with a family or person who provides them with individualized supports within a home setting. There are lots of ways that this can be arranged, including duplexes and other formats that allow the person to have ownership, choices, and control over their home living space.
Please join us to learn more about this another supportive housing option! There will be time built in for questions and opportunities to talk to multiple Mosaic staff about if Host Family CILA’s might be an option to you or your family! Please pass this along to others who might be interested in increasing the supportive housing options in Champaign County!
As always, there will also be time to meet with other families and staff from Community Choices! We hope to see you there!

The fall is fast approaching, which means that it’s almost time for our Chili Cook-Off! This fundraising event will take place on Sunday, October 2nd from 12:00-2:00pm. This year it will be at Ambucs park on University Ave. in Urbana.
Map to Ambucs Park

The Chili Cook-off will include a chili competition, live music, and a silent auction, as well as a chance for members and supporters to meet and build community!
To make this a fun and worthwhile event, we need your help! We believe that we are stronger together and this is a great chance for you to contribute to the Cooperative! Several members have already agreed to donate their time and talents, but more support is needed. There are lots of ways to give back. Please consider which of the following options might be best for you and your family!
  • Enter your home-made chili into the competition! (The winner will receive a prize! – See Registration Form below)
  • Put together or donate items for a basket in the silent auction! (We need at least 6!)
    • Past baskets have included Dinner and Movie certificates, Coffee and Treats, Wine, Massages, and Hand-made Goods!
    • Community Choices staff and Volunteers can help create and style the basket!
  • Visit local businesses to request donations or sponsorships
  • Serve on the planning committee to help with organizing, set-up and clean-up the day of the event!
  • Volunteer to provide additional sides or treats such as cornbread or dessert!
Please contact Becca Obuchowski by email at or by phone at 217-840-4580 with any questions on how to get involved. No contribution is too small!
