Optical Kerogen Analysis
Old wine in new skins or a step forward to bring source rock analysis to a new level?

Presented by Hartmut Jaeger

More than 95% of all source rocks contains mixed kerogen, mixed in composition but also in preservation and maturation of the different parts of the total kerogen in each sample. Mostly 3-4 kerogen types are mixed in the total kerogen of the source rock. Unlike the traditional bulk rock analysis, Optical Kerogen Analysis can identify and quantify this mix: The quantity of all kerogen types in each sample, the percentage of productive vs. unproductive kerogen (net-TOC), the quantity of oil-prone vs. gas-prone kerogen, the level of transformation and the different maturation in each part of the total kerogen to decipher the mostly complex system of hydrocarbon generation from mixed kerogen. This provides significantly enhanced source rock analysis and HC potential evaluation bringing it to a new level.
